hope i am in the right area. When leaving long guns in gun safe over a period of time can they get marks on the barrel area where the barrel rest on the material that the safe company put in the barrel rest? If they can what might cause it? like wipe down oils etc. Looked at a rifle to buy, person has it in a safe but where barrel is resting there is a mark. | ||

I store some of my long guns in a locked closet. On the stand where they sit the upper rail is above the muzzle. I fit a 1/2 inch oak dowel into the muzzle and the only thing touching is the recoil pad and the dowel in the muzzle. You can grind it down to a shoulder for a stop on a bench grinder if need be. I use a small jeweler's lathe to set a shoulder about four inches back so it doesn't drop into the bore. That way you have a supply of dowels for caliber changes in different rifles.
