Has anyone had a real good look at the Savage "package" rifles?
What did you think??

I know not to expect too much from the scopes.....it'll probably go on a .22.....but what about the guns??

I don't need fancy - I need functional.

Johnny Ringo,

THe Savage rifles are generally shooters, I hate to say it but they are usually on par with the Rem 700s in accuracy as they come out of the box.

They are uglier then a mud duck in my personal opinion but still a quality hunting tool if thats what your looking for.

I have seen a few feeding problems with the savages chambered for the 300 RUM. For this round I woulds not go with a Savage rifle.

Recoil control with the Savage rifles is in my opinion quite poor. They always seem to kick much harder then they should for the caliber they are chambered in.

I can remember two different 30-06 rifles I tuned up for customers that just seemed to kick like mules. They recoiled much harder then the 300 Win Mag I was range testing at the same time which was in a Ruger M77.

The Savages are also pretty heavy if you get the wood stocked versions, not a mountain rifle design.

With all that said, one can not deny the fact that they generally shoot most loads really well. For a hunting "tool" they are quality rifles.

As you say, the scope should really be upgraded for serious hunting conditions.

Good Shooting!!!

Owning five Savages (only because I haven't bought a sixth yet), let me tell you my take on the package guns.

You can do better on your own shopping for a GOOD scope than what they put on them. The lower-grade Bushnells are passable... but I advise everyone to run, not walk, away from Simmons scopes. They are a plague on the a** of optics humanity.

"Personally," I'd just get whatever Savage you wanted and do your own scope shopping.
