I was reading one of Jack O'Connors books the other day. He mentioned that the rifle he was using (his 1957 Model 70 .270) had a Tilden mount. Does anyone know what type of mount this was, how it functioned etc?

Thanks,
Chet

I have a set of Tildens on a mid 50s custom FN sporter. The rear base mounts with two screws perpendicular to the bore axis (as opposed to in-line), about 1/2" apart. The front base is conventional, like a Redfield. The rings are horizontally split and require disassembly of the scope to mount (mine uses a Weaver K3). I have a set of 7/8" and 1" rings.

Aha! That's why two different pre-war M70's I own have holes on the rear bridge straddling the centerline.

THe 1930s Weaver B top mounts also used two transverse screws.

You can find pictures of Tilden mounts in both Phil Sharpe's book "The Rifle in America", and in American Rifleman ads up through at least 1949. I would post some here, but I have never received a response to my several requests for info on HOW to post pics here...a computer guy I ain't.

Fla3006 -

Thanks very much. Looks simple and straightforward. Sometime within the next few days, I'll give it a try. Hopefully I won't screw up any of Saeed's electronic toys in the process. <G>
