I just bought a new 700 sps in 7mm-08 and when I feed a round into the chamber it scatches the casing and sometimes the bullet. It doesn't seem to effect the accuracy in that I have one shot kills on everything and all were between 100 and 250 yds, but I don't like the fact that it scatches the casings and sometiomes the bullets. The question is, what is the process called that I need to ask my gunsmith to do to fix this? I don't reload so I realize the scatched casing is kind of a non-issue, but I don't like the bullets being scratched. I am an accuracy nut and scatched bullets don't seem right. Thanks for any imput.

It's probable that the scratching is caused by sharp edges around the counterbore and chamber that should have been radiused somewhat by polishing or machining at the factory. The fix may involve removing the barrel and using a mild abrasive on such corners to provide a light radius to allow the brass to slide over without shearing (scratching)them...... It's not at all sure this is the problem and your smith will have to discover what the problem is.....there isn't a procedure to describe.....simply explain to your smith what is happening that you want repaired..... If you don't reload this may not be worth your effort.....the accuracy loss isn't likely measurable....personally, I'd just live with it until I traded the gun for another toy some day. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I just got through dealing with one of these SPSs scratching cases. What I found was the rough finish on the feed rails is the culprit. Judicious polishing with emery underneath the feedrails did the trick. Hope it helps, Rojelio

I had the same problem with a Sendero but the cause was that the magazine box was not radiused down enough where the rounds start up the ramp. Once I saw the problem it was real easy to correct with a round file and fine sandpaper.

Thanks for the insight. If. any of you guys gunsmith for a living or on the side, I would be willing to bet you will see this problem again. One of my hunting buddies bought the same gun this year in 300WSM and it does the exact same thing to the casing and bullet. I will look at my gun and see if I can do it myself. After doing some research I did my own trigger job and was very pleased with the result. It shoots like a dream. Now to get rid of the scratching. Thanks again. I should say that I really like this forum. I've been around to several areas and appreciate all of the discussions.
