Thanks for your input Billy. I appreciate you giving of your time and experience. But please don't discourage me, its what makes things happen when people try new things. Sometimes you fail and sometimes you win. The latter is very rewarding and falls under the heading of progress. I want to keep trying.

Brownell's now offeres both the cut-out mag box and the follower for for the RUM. I would like to keep this rifle as my switch barrel gun that already has 4 barrels and want to play and add the 300 RUM to the list if I don't have to radically change the reciever and ruin it for the other 4 barrels. Hopefully I can fiddle with it and the follower without opening up the feed rails.

Does anybody have a copy of the article that Layne Simpson (I think) wrote about it when it was first announced. I sure would like to get a copy of the article for my archives. Thanks again.

Does anybody remember just what has to be changed to convert a Rem. Mag to RUM? Mag box, feed rails, how about the follower?

I tried to feed a 300 RUM Dummy case from the mag and it just jumps out of the reciever. No mods done as of yet. I read the articles but lost the magazines they were printed in.

Thanks in advance.

Do not touch those rails. Order follower and new mag box from Brownells. Look at Model 70 factory rifle in that chambering. A careful measuremnt of rails reveals same diminsions as any other logn action Mod 70. You may need to have a little mill work done to the rear and shorten or change ejector.

IMO there is far to much free advice regarding taking a dremel or file to action feed rails. Think about it. Action will all ready feed belted mags along entire length of of rails. The fat cases oinly "extend" the belt the entire length of the case.

Feeding is dependent on a correct size mag and properly contoured follower. Rails, if rough, should only be lightly honed to achieve smoothness.

Howdy,
in all honestly, i find the rum to be a VERY unpleasent round to shoot, with minimal REAL hunting advantage on a 300 win.

if you must have a rum, either a win or a savage would be
cheaper and feed better.

This just isn't a cost-effective proposition. Besides the new magazine box and follower you'll need, the bolt face measurement simply does not match up, so you'll need to have that opened-up, and new extractor installed, and so forth. Much cheaper and easier to trade your current rifle in on a factory-original Model 700 that's already a .300 RUM.

Quite honestly, if you can't get the job done with a .300 Winchester or a .300 Weatherby, you're not going to get it done a .300 RUM -- if as well.

Question: Do you know what the .300 RUM was primarily designed for?

Answer: To pump new rifle, ammo, and brass sales.........

Olcrip,

I'll try not to talk you out of doing the conversion. When I did mine nobody had a box or follower, other than Remmington, they sent the wrong follower twice, but I made mine feed with std mag follower. If you can do it without cutting the rails thats the way to go, I was under the impression it was wide enough at the back but not the middle/front, but I can't remember. I shaved mine just a tiny bit based on Montana Rifleman info. They did my barrel and brake. I didn't buy thy HS sgl stack mag until about 4 mo back, not that I like it, but it does feed good.

I have a nib mdl 70 classic in 300 umag that I'm going to use the action for another project, we checked it and it feeds slick as snot also.

CDNN has Stainless Winchesters in 300 RUM on closeout right now. You can get a whole new rifle for about twice the cost of conversion. Well, it ain't quite that cheap, but it is still very reasonably priced.

PS Friends don't let friends convert their rifles to RUM's.

Don't let 'em talk you out of it Olcrip! Some folks just don't appreciate getting a 180gr NP going an extra 150-200 feet per second over a 300WM or 300WSM. Cost and efficiency be damned! So it'll burn 30gr more powder doing it.

Billy,

There is one good thing about RUM's. You know that you lose 1/8 inch of throat/barrel each shot. With a 26" barrel after 208 shots at least you don't have to shoot the darn thing anymore.

Jeffe, I might actually get paid next week. I'll send $ for the cannelure tube.

Jeffe, I got good news and bad news for you. The good news is you are doing well in welding class. The bad news is your final exam will be to weld a liberal's mouth shut and have the bead hold for 20 minutes. And you can't gop higher than 4000 amps or 1/4" diameter wire feed.

Gentlemen, I appreciate all the advice. The gun is already put together but the feed problem. That will be remedied with Mag box and follower. I have 80 Lbs of IMR 5010 that works great in my 7 STW and will do good in my RUM. I'm not a quiter and I will make it work. If Remington can do it so can I. I'll let you guys know how it turns out. I can drive over to Brownell's for the parts and spend less than $30.00. Thanks again. OLCRIP

Jeffe,

That ultramag barrel would make a great mater stake, way to high class for a pepper stake.

Congrats on the welding class, when we going to dup some stocks.

Gringo,
Would you please send your barrel to Olcrip. When his Rem barrel burns out he can have the Winnie barrel set back a few turns and rethreaded/rechambered.

Olcrip,
Send me a PM. I might be able to get you a couple Remington take off barrels since you will be rebarreling every 600 - 800 shots.

I admire any man with the spunk to stare cold logic in the eye and say "f**k it, I wanna make it, and so I shall".
I learned to fly a float plane on the Rock river near the Quad cities.

I always enjoyed TIG welding. My father recently retired as an Associate Professor of Welding Technology for the state college here. He used to give demonstrations welding two aluminum beer cans together using the Tungsten Inert Gas process. It was simply amazing. Best of luck to you in the pursuit of your welding endeavors. It is always an extremely handy hobby to have.

By the way, back to topic. I really enjoy the RUM cartridges, but I agree that the best feeding will be obtained with the H-S Detachable Mag.

One of my 300ultramags is bult on a 7mmremmag action. The magazine box and follower were changed, the rails were modified as well as the feed ramp and it feeds perfectly.I just had a new Gaillard medium varmint barrel installed and test fired the rifle with this barrel for the first time this morning.Using 180gr ballistic tips and reloader 25,the worst group was .580" and the best was .050" which is by far the smallest group that I have ever fired at 100yards.I have some more load development and some chronographing to do but the accuracy potential appears to be very good. The complete rifle and scope weighs 9-3/4 pounds and recoil is not a problem even without a brake.

Pretty area!
I learned to fly float planes just over on the Rock river. The biggest problem when the Mississippi floods is that it washes yuppies downstream from Minneapolis. Of course, that is better for the real folks in Minnesota.

JCN,
Did you take your instruction from Gustofson? I live about 2 miles from his place as the crow flies. Haven't seen his float plane at all this year.

As for the yuppies coming down front Minnietsota, ya sure ya betcha.

Took my new RUM out to the farm today for some chronograph work and was disapointed. The sun was in the wrong place and it put the shadow of the bullet in the wrong place instead of over the sensors. It did shoot a couple of inch and half groups at 250 yards. I'm real happy with the results but I wish I knew how fast it was moving.

Yeah,
Mr. Gustafson did a hell of a job teaching me to fly floats. He really keeps that C-180 in good shape. Going up and down the rivers I did splash and go's till I wanted to puke. I haven't heard if he is getting the engine overhauled or if he is having health issues. He is a very decent man.
