I have a problem with some threads on some equipment for an oilcompany. They are definitly 24 threads pr inch, but measures 18,06 mm or 0.711" on the diameter. The company can not find taps for this measurement and has asked me to make a set of taps. That is not a problem, but they are keen to find a source were they can be bought. They are made in France, but I think it was originally made in Houston, Texas. Any help would be appretiated. Thanks, Bent Fossdal Reiso 5685 Uggdal Norway

Sounds like a standard 18 - 1.0 metric thread. Same as a large spark plug thread found in older US engines. Mike Ryan - Gunsmith

Hello Mr. Fossdal: If the COMPONENT measures .711" and has 24 TPI, the nominal thread is likely 23/32"-24 NS. If the old TAP measures .711" with approx. 24 TPI, Mike from Michigan is likely correct. Or, it may be a completely custom thread, specific to the job. In any avent, we can provide taps to suit. A sample of the thread would be ideal or a specific thread spec, with thread form and PD tolerances. Knowing this and the quantity required, I'll be able to quote pricing. We have tried with 18x1mm and it is definetly not it. But Dave, I will take your offer about making them. The Company I am working for is the world wide, US owned company Schlumberger, and they feel better about having them made by a profesional maker, also for a steady supply in the future. We can ship over an outside and inside sample of the threads. I would like price on one, two and three sets of starter and bottom taps. If i have go from the company, I will give you the contacts here at Schlumberger, and you will be dealing with them directly. Thanks, Bent Fossdal Reiso 5685 Uggdal Norway

Dave Manson tooling! You can't get better than that! While I have only been visiting this site for a short time,I have learned we have some of the best in their specific areas as regular visitors. Nice to soar with eagles. Mike Ryan - Gunsmith
