Is it reasonably possible to rebarrel a modern Steyr Model S with rotary mag? It is a 458 at this point. Pretty barrel, but not the caliber I want. Thanks Rick DRSS

It can be done but I believe these are a press fit, so it takes some special skills. You might be better off just trading it for what you want. 458 Steyrs are pretty rare and I'm sure you could get a good buck for it.

Possible? Yes. Reasonable? No. They have pressed in barrels which basically are not designed to be removed outside the factory. Special holders and punch would have to be made. One way is to cut off your existing barrel and bore the chamber end out. Then thread the receiver for a threaded barrel. A far more efficient way is to sell it and buy another one. I see that is what sjm said to do.

When did they do away with the barrel threads ? I have a model L, or S, not certain the correct model in 22-250, from the 1980's, that has metric threads on the barrel shank. Am currently in the process of rebarreling it to 250-3000 JW

They have pressed in barrels much farther back than the 80s; the question is, which actions do they thread and which ones have pressed in barrels. I do not know the answer.

The Steyr SSG PIV has a pressed barrel, where the SSG 69 is threaded, supposedly to enable a shorter receiver on the PIV.

I rebarreled a Steyr 8-10 years ago...don't remember the action model but it was a sporter with the floppy synthetic stock (shiny exterior) Professional maybe?. That one was a 25-06. At the time some said those were pressed in/shrink fit, but the one I did had a metric thread tenon and was not difficult to rebarrel. Shot extremely well afterwards with a new Rock Creek barrel chambered in the same 25-06. Shoot straight, shoot often. Matt

What caliber DO you want? I have the same rifle, also in .458. Keep in mind the rotary magazine is matched to the caliber--a shorter round might not chamber smoothly, and a longer one wouldn't fit in the magazine. A discussion in the Classified forum about rechambering a Model S to .458 Lott didn't come to a conclusive answer, but I maintain the magazine wouldn't take a Lott round, and I can't see any way to extend the magazine. I think Steyr makes a great gun, but as others have commented, it might be easier and much less expensive if you sold the S and bought something else in the caliber you want. Appreciate all the input. I suspected it would be a long shot, which is why I asked experts. My thought was a 416 Taylor, which I hoped would work and feed ok. But not a good idea, too nice a piece to screw with. Many thanks for all the excellent input! Best Rick DRSS
