Just purchased a 99%+ old style MKX in 7mag. I currently have 4 .284 calibers(280, 280PDK,7mag & 7stw). If this 7mag shoots as good as it looks I'll replace my current beat up 7mag with it. That leaves me with a magnum faced action to build something on.

I just sent off an 06 action and my reamer to build a 400PDK (think 400 Whelen with 7 grains more capacity).

So what would you guys build and why on a magnum 3.4" box action??? Factory, Wildcat (75% of my rifles are wildcats alread) I don't really care.

As usual just my $.02

I agree with you on that thought. But was planning on leaving the action at 3.4"

The 7mm's have never thrilled me ( even though my son has a .284 that is a great little round) so I would go under or over the 7's. .338's are always impressive as are the .358 Norma Mags, then again under like a .264 Win Mag would be a fun one also. Or you could just go big and blow out a .338 or .358 Norma to a 9.3 magnum wildcat, now that might be fun!

Had thought about the 257 Roy. I have a 308 & 358 Norma. Had a 338 but replaced it with my wildcat. Have a 375H&H so the Ruger doesn't float my boat. Hmmm 9.3x338?

Paul,

John Barsness and Charlie Sisk developed a 9.3 BS, a 9.3 on the .350 Rem Mag case, if you are looking for a shorter number.

I like the .264 Win Mag too, but then I was bit by the 6.5 bug when young. I have been stuck on the 6.5-'06 for some years.

One of jeffe's AR rounds. 416, 458, 470, and soon to be 500. All would fit you mag box.

.338 Win. Mag. is my favorite between the 7mm/.30 class and the .375 H&H Mag., and if I were you I would go with that unless you already have it covered or want something less.

If something less is wanted, then I agree that the .257 Weatherby Mag. would be a lot of fun. I have a .25-06 that I love, so I have no real need for the Roy, but I have often thought about making one up anyway!

3400+fps with 100gr bullets, moderate recoil, whats not to love. i think I'll build one next year when I get home, no need but it sounds like a blast.

Regarding your new MkX in 7mm Mag. I have that same rifle only I put a McMillen sporter stock on it, black. Good groups with 150 grain Nosler Partitions with 63.5gr of H-4831SC. Right at 1/2" for three shots at 100 yards. With the factory barrel, I will not complain about accuracy. I have a Swaro 4-12x scope on it too, which makes a very nice rig.

Question really is what are you going to hunt?

Lots of nice choices for the action ... will handle cartridges able to take anything on the planet (at the .416 and .458 AR end).

If you're going to stay in North America, the .338 Win Mag, and one of the .375s (Ruger, Steyr) make a lot of sense. If you're going to hunt DG then one of the .375s and something larger make sense.

Try to locate someone locally that will let you shoot the heaviest chambering that you will consider ... and see if it is tolerable.

Then make your choice and have fun with it!

I made a 7mm Rem Mag into a .458 AR but I already had a .338 Win Mag, a 9,3x62, a couple of .375 H&Hs and a .416 Rigby. All of these are wonderful for their intended purposes. My choice was a bit easier.

Wink Thanks for the input. But I think I have confused you. NEED has nothing to do with it. On top of factory rounds I have several of my own wildcats (PDKS) based on a blown out shoulder forward 280 case. Basically a Gibbs +3-5 grs. I beat all factory loads for the compariable magnum round and ususally withing 50fps of my own handloads.

So going from memory on what is the safe or on loan to buddies.I have more than one for several of the listings. 223, 22-250, 243, 6mm, 25-06, 6.5PDK, 270, 7x57, 280, 280PDK, 7mag, 7STW, 308Norma, 340PDK, 350PDK, 358Norma, 375PDK, 375H&H, 416PDK. Building a 400PDK.

My existing 7mag was the cheap stocked MKX the new one is the nice stock. If it shoots the old one will be parted out. I like the 264 but from my 26" barrel I get a higher accurate load than my buddies 24" 264. I pulled the barrels from my attempts at a 243&25PDK because of small gains. But the 257Wby with long barrel would be an option.

Leaning heavy towards the 458AR. I have a real heavy piece of Bastogne to set it in. Hope to have my mind made up when I get back from Namibia next month.

So it really boils down to WANT not need.-
