Octagonal Crown Advice Needed...

Gents,

Please take a look at my first attempt at creating an octagon. Sorry for the poor quality photo.

Would it look better if I removed the round portion at the muzzle and then recrowned it?

What proportions or other design parameters should I include?

I would appreciate your thoughts on this matter.

(This happens to be the muzzle of my 10/22, which has slowly been undergoing a transformation to a sort of Sharps/falling block style - replaceable enough gun to experiment on.)

I sort of like it as is.
If I were to change anything I would cut the dove tail faces back on each end so the chamfer of the octagon corners would be continuous for 360° around the octagon.

Nothing wrong with what you have.
If I was going to change anything I might add a ramp to the rear of the sight.

Thank you, guys.

SR4759, I don't know exactly what you mean... Basically, shorten (lengthwise) the "riser" part that has the dovetail, so the octagon would be complete at each end...?

That might be pretty nice, but would the sight then be too short, overall?

Here's another pic with the blade installed, for a different perspective...

srtrax, I have thought about adding a hood. Would a ramp be "period-correct" for a Sharps-era rifle? Not sure how I could add one - any suggestions?

Thanks again!

1 shot,

I think it looks nice so far, but do you have an action stuck on the other end of the barrel yet? Being able to see the big picture will probably get you some better detailed responses from the more learned here on the forum.

for every hour in front of the computer you should have 3 hours outside

I guess it would help to read the whole post before running ones mouth...I didnt read the very bottom, Sorry! I like it as is and the only thing I would do now is show a picture of the complete Project.

Thanks, all. Here are a couple of new photos (hopefully) showing the intended direction...

(And if you can't appreciate the firepit-in-progress and pink flamingos, then I guess ya ain't a redneck...? Eeker)

Note red oak stock-to-be with brass buttplate and (yet-to-be-cast in said firepit) schnabel sketched on the forend. Super figure and some burl in the buttstock. It will be very petite, so it be extremely light, yet will still be "strong as oak."

Sharp eyes will pick up my brass escutcheon for the through-screw that anchors the back of the receiver. Looks like it needs a custom "headstamp"...?

I will be removing the trigger guard and replacing it with a falling block-style lever that will serve as the mag release.

Receiver will get milled with 3 flats, instead of the rounded top. Perhaps polished and gold anodized...? Might be too much, we'll see. Thought about making one from brass...

Not sure if I already mentioned the straight portion of the barrel immediately in front of the receiver will also be milled into an octagon.

I'll make some kind of flip-up or vernier-type peep sight.

Then it will sport my custom mag, I'll make a denim and buckskin case for it, etc., etc...

Ain't all happening fast enough, that's for sure! I've been working on this over a couple of years, already, between other things...

That is basically what I meant.
But when you first posted the sight was not installed so I could not see the length.
I spent a long time and a lot of hours on a lathe so I would have made the octagon a little longer and turned a 360° chamfer. You could still do that with a shorter sight.
What you have looks nice. Don't let my fascination for 360° edge breaks bug you.

I THOUGHT I had seen just about everything that could be done to a Ruger 1022... Smiler
I can take the fire pit no problems, the pink flamingos would loose their heads after this rifle was finished, falling block style.
Diffrent, let us see it when it's done.

Made a little more progress...

I'm just crazy about octagonal/round barrels, inspired by the very guys on this forum!!! Will be a long time before I can make anything worthwhile, but at least this is giving me hope that I might, someday...
