I have a .338 Rem Mag made by BSA for Herters with the dove tail base machined into the reciever. What rings does it take?

The BSA dovetail is designed for the no longer manufactured Parker-Hale rings. Used PH rings in good condition go for $50.00 - $ 75.00 CND here in Canada when you can find them. Be aware there are at least 2 different widths of PH rings made so make sure you buy the correct ones if you find some.

BTW: Some BRNO and Sako rings will fit if modified a bit.

Thanks for the info. It might be easier to go ahead and drill and tap for a Leupold base.

That is sort of what I have done with my BSA rifles. My gunsmith uses very thin Weaver bases which fit well on top of the flat dovetail without raising over-all height too much. Using low Weaver rings the scope bell, 40mm, clears the barrel by less than 1/8" We found that Redfield or Leupold bases, due to their thickness, raise the scope too high even with the lowest Leupold rings we could find.
