I am considering buying an aftermarket stock with aluminum bedding block for my Ruger MkII. The two stocks in question are the Hogue Overmoulded and the Bell and Carlson Medalist. I already have a Hogue stock for my 10/22 and like the coating. I also have a friend that has Howa rifle with a Bell and Carlson that he really loves. I am wondering about peoples experience with these two brands. Is the aluminum bedding block worth the extra money (about $100) over the pillar bedding? I wanna get rid of my Ruger canoe paddle and do it right the first time. Chuck Graber [ 10-07-2002, 04:48: Message edited by: Chuck Graber ]

Hi Chuck, My 416 Taylor has a B&C stock with the bedding block and it has been an outstanding stock. My 22-6mm Rem has a Hogue with the bedding block. I really like both stocks (as much as I can bring myself to like non-walnut stocks.) The Hogue is a bit heavier--but it is a varmint-style stock. The rubber overmolding gives a very positive grip. They are both good stocks--what caliber is your Ruger? I prefer the B&C for a carrying rifle. If you have a chance to handle both types before you buy, you would have something to judge by. In reality, though, I don't think you can go wrong compared to the stock that came on the rifle! IMO the $ for the bedding block is worth it. Andy, The Ruger is chambered in 30.06 and gets used almost exclusively for Whitetails in Ks. I would not really consider it a carry rifle as I don't often walk more than about 3-4 miles a day hunting. The few extra ounce won't bother me. Chuck Graber

Howdy Chuck, My advice to you is ask your friend to let you handle, walk with, shoulder, his rifle, etc. to see how it fits you. See if you can find both stocks and test them for fit and comfort. Then buy the one that fits best. I have a B&C on a Sako .340 Weatherby. Great stock, it handles the considerable recoil wonderfully, but it is too thick in the grip area for my arthritic hands. Good luck, and good shooting. Coach
