I have access to a Remington model 600 action and am considering having a rifle built on it . I am considering three cartidges, 250 sav. 250 AI, or 358 win. Not sure which one to go with( rifle will eb mainly for deer/woodchucks). Anyone have a rifle built from the 600 action? any thought son the action?

I know your woodchucks are bigger than our rockchucks out here, but is a .358 Winchester really called for? Should have bought that .416. Acually that .250AE or the standard.250 Savage sounds like a nice package on the 600 action. Good luck. Dan
I have a few rifles on 600/660 actions. 222 Rem, 284 Win, 6mm, 308 (two of them) and I think they make great rifles. A lightweight rifle in 250 AI built on a 600 is a joy to carry. I traded another 600 I had to a 'smith friend of mine and that is exactly what he is building. Great little rifles. A 358 is a little large for woodchucks, but you never know when they'll charge, so better safe then sorry. - dan

So I was thinking abut the DEER when the 358 came to mind lol. Seriously thought the 250( either version is sounding better evry minute.Glad to hear there are people who like the 600 action I have not familiar with them at all.
Thanks guys

Tom Have you thought about the 243 or the 6mm Remington? They make a fine deer/antelope rifle with 95 to 100 grain bullets, and a good varmint rifle for extended ranges with 55 to 85 grain bullets.

Yes I have thought about the 243/6mm, but some reason the 250 sav is a cart. I have always wanted but never owned. Same for the 358. I guess we all have some things that we just want even though there may be more pracicle choices avaiable.

Tom the 250 Savage would be a great deer Varmint ctg no doubt. As to the 358 Win, a little strong for varmints but it is a great hunting cartridge for big game in a short action.

I used a 600 action for a 250 Savage with a 20" Shilen #2 and could not be happier. It has become the go to gun in our deer camp here in the Texas Hill Country. This cartridge really deserves to be chambered in more factory guns because for the majority of shots at deer, here in my area at least, its sooooo much better than any of the new cartidges including the short mags.
Incidentally, I also have a 250 Savage Improved on a 700 action with a 23" #3 Hart that's really nice too, but there's something about the old, classic 250 Savage that just grows on you big time.
I would get a 6mm rem with the lightest contour barrel available, 20". It will drop whitetails just fine and reaches out to touch chucks. With a light contour, packing it will be easy.

Go with the 250 either as it is or AI.The 243 is also a good short action cartridge. The 6mm Remington does not ALWAYS work well in the short actions as some bullets must B seated 2 deep 2 function through the magazine. Therefore no real advantage over the 243.
