I just bought a 300 WSM.I chose a Hornady 165gr flat base bullet to work up a load for it.The COL shows to be 2.840-2.900.This bullet touches the lands @ 2.820,so I seated it @ 2.810.The deep seating of the bullet also has me reducing the powder charge.I worked up a couple of loads using IMR-4350 and Winchester WXR.I took it up to 66.5gr with the IMR-4350 before I started getting a sticky bolt and backed down to 65.0grs as my load for it.With the Win.WXR,I went up to 71.0grs and backed down to 69.0grs as my choice load.I haven't had a chance to get back to the range to chronograph my velocities yet to see what I came up with, but it seems like it's either the bullet I chose or this rifle has an awfully short throat. It does however seem to shoot quite well.

Short throat? maybe. Not that you are going to use any, but have you tried factory stuff through it? If so, how did everything look and feel? Any pressure signs?

If the accuracy is good, and after you chronograph it if the velocities are something you can live with then I wouldn't worry too much about it. You can always lengthen the throat, but if you don't need to then I wouldn't.

I have one in a Weatherby Vanguard (Howa 1500) and it's the same way. I wish they had chambered the rifle in a long action (I don't mind the extra bolt throw) just so that I could seat the bullets with base at the neck/shoulder junction. If you have room in the magazine well to seat them farther out, buy/rent a .30 neck and throater (with extension) and hand cut the throat as deep as you want it.
