GG375,

What an awesome collection of rifles and pictures, some of the best I've seen. Sometimes it's a hassle while in the field to take the time to set up and take a good picture, but they are so worth while when you can look back years later to see and share. Great rifles, I think my favorite is the BRNO 21, I think I need one of those!

GG,

Outstanding rifles and photos. Is your zebra really that "brown" vs black. Quite a trophy.

Mike

Legistine actu quod scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Thanks mate. Yes the Mod 21's are lovely old rifles. They are very slim, and lightweight with lots of desirable features. You need to shout yourself one Smiler

Mike

Well the finished product is certainly more brown than black. To be honest I can't recall what the colour was like in the field but both my shoulder mount and flat skin are more brown and white than black and white. I thought it might have been something in the tanning but not sure. They are both from Zimbabwe.

Happy New Year.

A thread I believe was the start of something good and worth reviving.
Hopefully we will see it grow with some more good posts.
Maybe the moderator can move it to the new Custom Rifles section?

von gruff,

ironically, the member who began this thread has moved to parts unknown and left a very bad taste in the mouths of folks.

Another member was having some work done for a project and his item was returned to him in exceedingly poor condition.

Really tood bad as it looks like Bill did some nice work in the past.

Have read the post and seen the pics of the rust on the mod 70 action. Hope it can be restored as the satisfaction of taking a custom afield really adds to the hunt.

........like GG375, my 265RCBS has a Gabe Gatti stock, and the workmanship is breathtaking.
These are exceptional rifles to take on a hunt, but the thought of damage is always in the back of your mind.

265 RCBS..Gabe Gatti stock...Mod. 70 action...stainless barrel..It was made by Larry Sims and he gave it to me as a gift some years back after I looked after him when he was crook.
Larry has been a mate of mine for many years and has taught me a hell of a lot about gunsmithing.

GG375,

I really like your taste in rifles, especially the Brno 21's. I noticed your Brno 270 is set up without a rear sight and a barrel banded front sight....is there a rear peep sight that I'm not seeing? Anyways, those rifles have beautiful lines.....Thanks for posting them.

Yes, well spotted - there is a windage adjustable, fold down/up ghost ring peep in a machined recess under the rear mount.

Great picture Phil. I don't know anything about bears, but that thing looks like an absolute toad.

I'd love to see some more pics of that rifle. Everything I've seen from Lon has been outstanding.

Gentlemen: The hunting sports already have an uphill "PR" battle.

I'd suggest you pose your trophies respectfully. Minimize the blood and blown up flesh. And...never...sit astride a dead critter.

This has been the advice for years from PH's and outdoor photographers/writers.

coffee Yeah, people started complaining about not being able to see and download my photos a couple of months back. I can only see about 1/10 of the photos that people post. I switched to Flickr. They still give you about a gig of free hosting. Someone said you could use Facebook too and Amazon had a free photo hosting site.

Yep! That was him, lovely lady, I miss her but my aims better now Mad......he was a top bloke and very talented. Unfortunately he was quite ill a few years back and moved down to his sons place where I lost track of him, I don't think he survived . He worked on and cut chambers in several of my rifles.

I bet I saw your 265 rifle, we looked at many that afternoon. The one I remember most was a 9.3x64, the first I had seen in that chambering, and a beautiful rifle.
Funny what a small world it can be, 14,000 miles apart and seeing the same rifles.
