Curious if you were building a rifle with a short action, and wanted something other than a remington, would you shorten a mauser, or what are the options for the shorter mauser actions? Or would it be much easier to just go to a Sako L579 or other quality action?

Winchester SS classic CRF? Any thoughts esp. from the experienced appreciated. Thanks.

I have the little Model 70 Custom Compact they call it. It has the SA (short action) and the caliber is .308. Damn nice rifle. I wouldn't sell it if I couldn't get another one. I think the SA Model 70 action is a fine short action for any project based on the .308 family of cases. Not a whole lot to do to spif it up a bit either.

Whats yer budget?

-H&W kurz about $5500... exquisite!
-GMA kurz about $3000, but needs $$$finishing by a good smith.
-Original kurz, not cheap, if you can find em. Me id rather have a new chrome molly kurz for same money.
Maybe Mr Satterlee would build you a nice Kurz for 3k that dont need additional finishing.
-WFH pre64 copy, n2 3.0" magbox $1950
-SugeonRifles rem700 copy with integ. recoil lug&bases, one piece bolt with side release $1200
-WinM70sa- good value and good for 308 based rounds,,,or take the spacer out and 257rob,6.5x55,7x57 slides right into the 3.08" length magbox.
-SakoL579 not many who dont like em.

since you mentioned Sako then pushfeeds are acceptable to you.....and I love the M-70 SA pushfeeds and eventhe CRFs as well.

Not expensive and a great performer.....I'd take a M-70 PF over the Sako!

Interesting feedback.....on the L579, had one and traded it off.........hate when I regret doing those things.......very smooth feeding, nice trigger, like the scope mount set up, and the action seemed very well made......the gun shot well, and I shot well with it.

Had plans to make a 6.5/308 before selling it....prior to Rem's 260 intro.

Thinking of a 6.5x47 Lapua on whatever I build next, but if a single shot would contemplate x55, as Lapua brass is there ready made for both.

Did not know the Win. had that much room w/o spacer. Really think I'd be happy with a M-70 SS CRF/claw........or a L579, but was wondering what Mauser action options are there for the SHORTEST action......or would one (money aside-not that it is a financially viable option for me...) simply shorten a '98 to get what you wanted?

I like the extractor much better on the Sako than Remington. It just 'looks reassuring' and I want something different.

In your experience then, is a M70 action potentially as accurate as any? When trued, etc. of course? Thanks.
