Common number used is 55 lbs/inch. In the field a practice to use is take the allen wrench on the short end, torque tightly, then use the long end, more leverage, and give approx. 1/8 turn and will work well. With pillared wood stock the torque above is ok or with synthetic stocks pillared, not pillared, bedded, etc. you may be a bit strong w/ 55 for some crushing of stock may occur. Normally or at least on Rem 700/40X you torque the front screw first and then the rear one and if you have the smaller middle screw, do not tighten, but merely make it snug. Others may use different no's/techniques, but this has worked for a lot of long range/Palma shooters over the years.

For guns that are in HS Precision stocks and those that I have added pillars, or already have pillars, I take them to 65 in/lbs. All others I go until they feel right. But I'm with dsiteman on the center screw, just snug.

I use 40 inch pounds on my match rifles, regardless of make. Seems to be enough, and I don't worry about crunching anything.

On my Musgraves I torque the middle and front screws and just snug up the tang screw. On the others I do as suggested above, torque the front and rear screws, and snug the middle one.

I do the Musgraves differently because they have a LONG, SOLID, FLAT bottom to their actions with no magazine cut-out in the bottom. The front and middle screws are at approximately the front and back of the flat, while the tang screw fits into a relatively weaker Mauser-style tang, which I don't like to risk stressing by over-tightening.

35-45 for a Bansner Hi-tech stock, 33-36 for a Mcmillan with no pillars, well over double that for an HS precision with bedding block.
