I'm working on a project that is out of what I know. I've got a Mexican 1910 action, that I got as a barreled action with bolt. I'm going to make a custom rifle on it, in 7x57. I bought a swedish M96 trigger guard and mag box to use. It fits correctly. What I need to order now is a follower and spring. What do I need to get to make sure it will work with the M96 box and the 7mm cartridge? When I worked on M98 full size actions in the past, I know I had to shop around in the followers I had on hand to get different cartridges to feed correctly the last round or two. I don't want to have to buy a bunch of different followers to trial and error this any more than I have to, as I have no intention of getting into these enough to build a parts supply to work from. Thanks!

Get a Swedish one. Close enough; I will test it for you so you don't have to buy but one. Then if it doesn't work, buy any old 98 one; that will work too. I'll test that too. Tomorrow. Bottom line is that 7mm is very forgiving on feeding.

If I remember right, the front vertical wall of the Swede and Mexican are in a different place

They are; you just have to solder a 1/16th piece of steel in the front of the box; easier than finding an original Mex box. I use 95 Chileans; those fit as is.

You're right, Duane, I'll have to shim it a bit in front. The back is fine. Thanks, DPCD, I'd appreciate any info you can give on fit/function. I'll look around and see if I can find my mauser parts, I may have a standard 98 follower that I can check for fit too. Not sure where the parts are, I'm about 1/3 unpacked from moving/storage/building a new house/shop.

Mexican 36 action- follower test results with stock Swedish 96 mag box and 3 rounds of 7x57 with 139 grain Hornady; 1: Swedish follower; 100% smooth feeding. 2: German 98 follower: 100% smooth feeding. 3: 95 Chilean follower; 66.66% smooth feeding; third round would hang under the lip but you are going to fill that in with used bubblegum. 4: 95 Chilean mag box and follower (which fits the Mex receiver): 100% smooth feeding. 5: 1903 Springfield follower; wouldn't fit but if I ground off .050, I am sure it would work. Point is, most anything will work, in this case.

Thanks again, dpcd. After a bit more reflection and looking at parts available, your conclusions are probably fortunate, as what is being sold as followers for specific rifles vary so much, and overlap, that I doubt I'll get something that is really what it's advertised as anyway. I found a couple of parts cabinets, and found mauser triggers, shrouds, springs, action screws, cocking pieces, extractors, and firing pins, but no followers. I'll have to find complete rifles and scavenge parts from them to try anything of my own. Or, just order the cheapest milled part in good condition I can find, and work with it.

Use the Yugo M24/48 follower and spring for the Mexican mauser. You will find several lengths of followers. The shortest followers are the 1910, 1936 Mex, the 1903 Turk and 1909 Peruvian, and the intermedate Yugo 24, 24/48, 48 actions. They are 2.915' long Then the std M98 follower is just a bit longer over all at 3.070" long I have been cutting 1909 Arg trigger guards in half and welding them back together so they will fit onto the Mexican receivers. The front will match up just fine, but the rear section is about .200 too long, hence the cut and weld. JW

Thanks, Duane, I'm wanting to do an interesting project myself, so will be modifying the bottom metal. Haven't done a custom mauser in probably 5 or 6 years, just getting to the point where I will have a space and the time to do it, so this will probably be the first one I do. I'm sure yours would be an extremely elegant solution.....
