| I had not thought about the 7 x 57. Thanks for the reminder.

| 7x57 is what the Mexicans were orginally. They aren't worth the troble and expense to rebarrel, I will give you $75 for the Mexican action. |

| Jordan I've done a 308 and a 284 on a Mex. Mauser and they make nice rifles. They handle those cartriges just fine.I presume you are refuring to the small ring action,as they also had large ring actions. |

| The Mexican Mauser is a large ring short action Mauser, not a small ring action unless its a 1910 Styer Mexican Mauser, if I am not mistaken... |

| Ray, the 1910 and 1936 are small 98s, and the 24 is an intermediate large ring, and the 54 or 56 (I forget) is a large ring standard action.
I think steyr made the pre98 (i think)

| The 54 is an arsenal remanufactured 36, into 30-06. I'm not sure about the 56. - Dan |

| Don't assume that the heat treatment is good enough. I've had problems with improper heat treatment of the bolt on two separate 1945 Mexican Mausers, one of which broke at the bolt face upon firing a near max load. I'm fortuntate to still have my eyesight after that one came apart. Both were chambered for belted magnums, so the the .284 would not be a problem. Just get the bolt heat treated properly, and you shouldn't have anything to worry about. |

I picked up a Mauser chambered in 308 that I later found is a '93 Spanish Mauser. Ive still not fired it. Is this essentially the same action? Still wondering how safe mine is.. |

| No, that's a different series of Mauser, older and generally weaker. - Dan |

| Oh, and the 308 it's probably chambered for is the 308 CETME, not the Winchester, it's a lower pressure round (even though it looks the same). = Dan |

| Dan is exactly correct...
the spanish is NOT a 98, is does not have a third member, nor the superior heat treating.
further, the cetme is diminsionally the same as the 7.62x51 (not the 308, though it would take a good eye to catch) and runs at a far lower rate..
which also means, DO NOT SHOOT 308 in a cetme
