Hi All,

I have to drill and tap a single shot barrel for a forend hanger, problem is my drills don't seem to be up to job.

Do I need to use carbide or cobalt? I have carbon and HSS taps, if HSS drills don't touch it how will my taps do?

Any tips??

Thanks in advance.

A High Speed Steel drill bit should be plenty. Use oil.

I would recommend using a "spotter" or center drill to start the holes, then switch to a twist drill.

Marcos: I would suggest dovetailing it; you won't have to go as deep as a tapped hole. I think it a better way.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for the replies, I finished the job.

WOW, what a DUMMY! I am, turns out that I had lowered the table on my drill press and forgot, then I put all of the drill bit into the drill chuck and you guessed it. The drills spindle would go no farther than .050" into the barrel. Dumb, dumb, dumb!

By the way, the barrel is .900, no taper, so the .185" I drilled should be safe? I have dove-tailed as well but always take too long fitting the tapped insert, is there a secret to it?

Thanks again,

Marcos (elalto)
