Has anyone tried to make a 2 piece bottom metal for a 98?

That is, have the triggergaurd and mag be two pieces, like a winchester, or enfield?

I read your post, and am a little bit confused.

You ask if anyone makes a 2 piece "like a mauser".

Most mauser triggerguard/boxes are 1 piece. The could be called two piece in the sense that the floorplate is another piece added to the triggerguard/box.

At various times I have seen ads for separate trigerguards for those who want their mausers to have a blind magazine. I believe at one time Blackburn made them, as did London Guns and others. In addition, some people like to put shotgun style triggerguards on their rifles when they are using a blind magazine. At one time Brownells carried, and maybe still does carry them.

Any good machinist could make you a triggerguard to your liking. A magazine box is another story. There have been numerous posts on magazine geometry at this site and a search will reveal some very good information on that subject.

Blue,

I made a typo while I had a migrain.

I meant like a enfield or winchester... that should have been clear... a mauser is a ONE PIECE triggerguard and mag, the floorplate aint part of it.. or one would call the winchester (one piece bottom and mag) a 3 piece.

I can make anything I like... I was just wondering if I was barking up the wrong tree... I realize the box is part of the struture of the action, and I would keep it as part of that... just wider and longer in the mag box, without making a new trigger guard.

This aint complicated, just a different approach. If you don't understand it, wait and watch till i post some pics.

I kind of figured you made a typo, but with the way things have been going on this site lately with all of the bullshit
(winter better end soon) I decided to post based exactly on the words that appeared in front of me.

I certainly understand it.

And I know you can make anything you want. So make one and show us.

Cool your jets.

Actually, years ago I did make two triggeguards. Basically, what I did was mill off the tiggeguard bow on two regular mauser triggerguards and replace them with bows in the shape of a blackburn guard.

Jeffe, I tried it something similar just for kicks with a couple of five dollar rusted out bottom metal units from a gunshow. I cut off the front tang and center of the mag box, then spread the mag box until my Ackley rounds looked like they stacked ok. I cut the front tang and center from the front mag well on the other junker, adjusted them for width and used them for spacing in the front. I had it all jigged up and took it to a guy to weld. It came back all warped and in plain old sad shape. It worked well enough that I know the theory is sound it is just the execution that sucked. It left me wondering what to do for a follower and a floorplate but that could be dealt with also. From the looks of your machinery and your past project postings this is well within your capabilities. My latest thoughts on this follow yours but I am going to try a sheet steel mag box from a Sako AV and see how that fits. I am not sure if the geometry between a push feed and a CRF are compatible though.

I am making one right now using a Winchester M 70 box, the Mauser trigger guard loop and milling a new magazine bottom side and floor plate. It will be just fine when I finish.
Mucho chipo though.

Ya'll,
These are pretty close to what I am thinking..

i'll make a release for the floorplate

then i'll cut, with a slitting saw, behind the back of the box, BUT NOT cutting it in 2... this will be for increased length.

then i'll cut the mag box off...

then make another longer and wider box... with "feet" down to the new, enfield looking, (if you ever take an enfield apart you'll know what I mean) bottom metal.

the new mag box will fit ONLY from the top, but it's little footsies will reach the bottom...

idea is to NOT hack the hell out of the bottom to fit in a 458 lott or 470 capstick...

just some thoughts...

Brno made one of the models, either the 21 or 22 with an multi piece guards.
The main section was 1/4" thick steel, this is what is now called a rail type. It went from the front screw to the rear screw. It had cuts for the stamped sheet metal magazine box to go into. They spot welded the box into the rail section.
The front boss was lathe turned, and was loose. The guard bow was the shotgun type that was threaded into the rail section. I had several of them that also had double set triggers in them from the factory. Then the military type floor plate was used. This guard was composed of 5 parts, not counting the trigger unit.

Several years ago I designed an rail type for Brownells, for the Mauser, with a stamped box. Just never got around to it because of the work load and machinery we had at the time would not keep up with the expected demand.

Jim,
Your comments are always taken with a HUGE amount of credit... thank pal.

I should be receiving my slitting saws today, so I am going to jack around with this awhile, with what basically sounds like your course.. except I am going to use some junk turks to get started.
