I have a 300 ultra win mod 70 blued. I am thinking about having it rebarreled to 375 ultra.

To me it seems like it would be easy to send it to E.R. shaw and have it rebarreled there. Plus it seems that there prices are low too.

Any opinions or info would be appreciated thanks.

RMiller, I have on order a 300Rum in BDL that I bought for both enjoying as is and converting to a 375RUM if I feel like it.Same bolt face diameter.I 've been shooting match barrels lately and have not tried a recent factory barrel with good handloads.Got one yesterday and will compare it to one I have ready. My oppnion is if the 300RUM shoots tight keep her and buy a seperate 375RUM rifle. That way you have a best North American rifle and a best African rifle.

I have not had any experience with the shaw barrels, not knocking them, but I would go with a douglas at least, or one of the best mfgr such as a hart, shilen, pac-nor ect. Have the action trued to get the most possible out of you rifle/action.Then bed it with a 1" pad in front of the receiver. I have had a lot of sucess with target and hunting rifles done this way.
I do have a friend that wanted the most bang for his buck, put a kreiger SS factory contour bbl on a remington long action 30-06, and didn't blueprint the action. He put it in a tupperware stock and the damn thing would shoot 5 shot 1 1/4" groups at 200 yards with factory Fed loads, with the sierra bullet. He had 400.00 total in the rifle.

Right now I have two Win mod 70 300 ultra mags. One is stainless and the other is blued.

The only rifles in a 375 ultra are Remingtons. I had one in a 700 stainless synthetic which I did like. But now they are only made in the XCR with a 24 inch barrel at $800 . I could have the rebarrel job for a lot less than that.

Let 's say that only function or accuracy is our concern.

If you like dealing with a "soup nazi", then you just might get along with E. R. Shaw. Okay they may have changed since I did business with them but I would doubt it. I do know that a lot of people have had good success with their barrels including me. I still would look elsewhere.

Heh Heh....

RMiller,

There's a whole bunch of people I would gladly knock heads with about this issue......Chic ain't one of them.

I use Shaw barrels and their services....as does my brother (Idared on this forum).

The economy of these barrels is having them installed by Shaw. They are hunting grade barrels of equal or better quality than commercial barrels. You can still get a barrel chambered, installed, and test fired for less than $200.

Shaw has recently (within the last 4 years?) upgraded their machinery and staff to upgrade quality and increase production.

I don't think you'll have much trouble finding recent customers.....or their willingness to give honest evaluations.

Depending upon your requirements and expectations, you may wish to get feedback from Jim Kobe and further feedback from Chic.

I've used Shaw.....no complaints here.

However my own barrels are from Douglas.

Since you asked, the only positive experience I've had with E.R. Shaw barrels is in removing them. Of course this opinion was formed several years ago, and while it is possible that their quality has improved some, there are just too many GOOD reputable barrel manufacturers out there for me to risk losing customers over. I will stick with those of known quality. Good luck!

I've used them before. I had a .300 win mag Ruger 77MKII that had the usual minute of bucket accuracy. I sent it off to Shaw and had it rebarreled to a .257WBY. It took about 2 1/2 months to get it back. It shot MOA with factory ammo and cleaned up easily. Most accurate ruger I've ever owned. The only thing I didn't like is they stamp thier name on the barrel. Roll Eyes

Nothing special, but it was a fun rifle. I paid $325 for this stainless fluted barrel installed. I'd use them again without hesitation.

You really don't want to hear my opinion on ER Shaw, and besides I just get all worked up and pissed off anyway.

However, if you are looking for a Rem 700 in 375 ultra mag, I know where there is a new or like new one for sale.

I purchased a Shaw barrel recently. This is the best picture I can manage.
It has tooling marks as seen in the picture all the way through the barrel. Worse yet, it has 0.001" reverse choke.

I haven't installed it yet. I plan to lap out the reverse choke first, and that should remove the roughness, too, so in the end, it may turn out OK. But this is my last Shaw barrel.

Judging by the rings, how old would you say that one is??? Big Grin

I'm afraid even "PhotoShop" couldn't help that one. Good luck...

With a twist THAT tight, it must be for 70,000 gr. bullets? (Grin)

I've had perhaps a dozen or so Shaw barrels in the last 3-4 years, and perhaps and equal number of Douglas barrels during that same time. I don't really love either of them, and have since graduated to pac-nor CM barrels. However, if forced to choose between Douglas CM and Shaw, I'll take my chances with Shaw. All the aforementioned Shaw barrels were acceptable, fouling was OK and accuracy was generally quite good. The Douglas barrels were about the same, EXCEPT two of the Douglas barrels were, however, BY FAR the worst fouling, roughest bored aftermarket barrels I have ever dealt with. I doubt I'll go with either of them again...

GV, maybe the soup nazi is gone? I actually had good luck with their product, just not with management and it was an issue due to them not being able to supply their stock barrel that I had ordered. Changing calibers was supposedly going to put me back at the end of the line after waiting for 3 months. When I argued with him he hung up. "You GET NO SOUP!" I sincerely hope he is gone or retired, or preferably tortured. We did work it out after I called back and I got the barrel caliber I wanted, the size of the blank was something they did not have on their list (thank god) and needed some serious recontouring to end up with a decent shape.

I assume they thought they were teaching me a lesson with the Pier Column barrel and I have spent the last 12 years "extolling" their virtues.
