Anybody know? I believe there is a difference in bore size (slight) but would like to know any differences in chamber dimensions. I´ve seen only a picture of the 9x63 in "cartridges of the world" and the shoulder looks like its similar to the whelen AI
just curious

If you want diagrams, I'd suggest googling "Steve Reloading Pages." He has diagrams of many different cases on his site.

The real difference is one is a wildcat (35 Whelen) and the other is a standard factory round (9.3x62). That may not seem like much, but the 35 Whelen was a wildcat for many years with varying dimensions that was finally "standardized" by Remington. The 9.3x62 has always had the same dimensions. The 9.3 x 62and 35W (30-06) cases are different enough that the Hawk/Scoville rounds based on the 9.3 will out-perform the AI equivalents by a measurable margin. But the differences are similar enough that 9.3 x 62 can be fireformed from 30-06 cases.

The reason it works that way is because the 9.3 operates at 45,000 psi so the web of the smaller but stronger 30-06 (being designed for 58,000 to 60,000 psi) isn't stressed too badly as a 9.3 x 62.

That said, the measurable margin isn't necessarily enough to say one substantially out performs the other. More a matter of degrees.

I have the standard chambering reamer for both of these cartridges and the 9.3 X 62 has a lot more freebore ground onto it.

I can only assume therefore that the standard chamber of the 9.3 is a heavily freebored chamber like Weatherbys.

This might account for some impressive performance numbers from the 9.3 X 62.

If one really wanted he could freebore the .35 Whelen as well and gain some energy in his reloads.

I think he asked about the 9x63 not the 9.3x62 as equivalent of the 35Whelen AI. They look basically the same to me but I don't have drawings of either. The standard Whelen seems to have a slightly straighter case than the 9 being a little larger at the shoulder. Don't have AI dimensions.

Yupp, the 9x63 use the same .358 bullet as the .35Whelen. Cases are very simmilar, at same preassure same velocity will be achieved.

Sorry 'bout that. Missed it all together. Can't comment on the 9 x 63.
