There has been of late some questions concerning the differnt scope base / scope rings and what may or may not interchange. So pay attention, here a list of the six common dovetail / scope rings that I have made over the years. *************************************************************************************************************** This is for the Male base / receiver portion of the dovetail, any recoil shoulders are above the height of the dovetail and not included here. Dovetail width is measured side to side using two pins of a given diameter, and the dimensions are to the outside of the two pins. Brownell .487 over two .040 pins, x .090 - .093 tall, serrations on left hand side of dovetail x 40 LPI, hardened material Kimber / Brownell .468 over two .040 pins, +/- .002, x .107 - .109 tall, 1018 material Small Brno, # 1 -5 rimfire, and 527 .724 over two 1/16” pins, x .100 - .102 tall Large Brno, ZG, 600 to 602 series, 550 series .812 over two 1/16” pins, .117 - .119 tall Old Talley, non removable clamp on scope ring, recoil shoulder of base only in front of ring. .502 over two .040 pins, x .098 - .100 tall New Talley, removable clamp on scope ring, recoil shoulder in front and rear of ring. .510 over two .040 pins, x .114 - .116 tall Normal tolerance of dovetail over pins, + / - .002” unless noted otherwise *************************************************************************************************************** And yes, the Brownell used the 40 LPI serations as the only method of recoil stopage. He had serations on the base and clamp that mated with each other. I was told by Jack Warne in 1986 that they had changed the specs on the Brownell dovetail to ease production, and to also fit their Kimber of Oregon Model 82 receiver better. Please note that there are TWO differnt Talley dovetails, the New Talley is the common one availabe for the past decade plus James Wisner Custom Metalsmith | ||

The Talley Dimensions seem a bit off. Now I have not measured a Talley base. But the ring dove tail is 60 Degrees and has a depth of .090" Measured off my tool makers scope. That puts it at 60 degrees. With a .114" to .116" tall that would be 65 Degrees and the rings don't show that under the scope Either way Thanks for the Info This is going in the note book {EDIT} Never mind I see what Talley is doing. They are allowing .025" clearance between the bottom of the ring and the dovetail. In that way the angle is 60 degrees with a .114" over all height of the angle. Across the points of the dove tail would be right around .5315" At the theoretical point. www.KLStottlemyer.com Deport the Homeless and Give the Illegals citizenship. Thanks James, I see I was wrong about the size of the G&H and Billingsley/Brownell sizes. How do these compare to the ubiquitous 22RF dovetail? BTW I really salute you for sharing your knowledge with others, all too many smiths are too insecure to share their expertise and so we're constantly reinventing the wheel to some degree.
