I have a JC Higgins action. Any reason a straight rebarrel to 9.3x62 would not work well? Anyone ever have any feeding issues or any other problems that needed additional gunsmithing? Thanks
Yep, as long as it was originally a ..470 bolt face, and for a 30-06 or 270, or something similar, it should work perfectly. If it was a mag, then, no.

As dpcd indicates cryptically, the 9.3x62 was specifically made to work in original Mausers, while the .30 Springfield had its own rifle.
The 9.3 is 10 thou. wider at the shoulder, which is nearly 1.5mm farther forward than on the .30/06.
I would give it a go and test it exhaustively, esp. if you want to take it anywhere there might be dangerous game. If you have any hang ups, get someone skilled to fix it.

A few years ago I had a 9.3X62 built on a M50 JC Higgins action. It was basically as simple as screwing on the new barrel. There were no modifications required to the action and function was perfect.
Lindy, I have a nice old (but unused) walnut Fajen stock. It fits the action and bottom metal nicely, and fits me nicely. The unusual Sears trigger set up is gone, and it has a Timney. The left side flag safety is still in place, I'm OK with that since the other FN I have is set up that way (a Weatherby). Some day though I may decide to opt with a M70 system.
The problem is that I'm in a gunsmith desert, I'm good with fitting and bedding stocks, which in this case is a piece of cake, but the re-barreling and any other gunsmithing that may be required is by mail (or lots of driving). I dont want to get a barreled action back that doesnt feed right.
That is a great looking rifle. But I would think that after you sprung your wallet for a rebore job, a nice piece of wood, and custom work on the stock, you might have considered upgrading the scope bases and rings just a bit!!

Mine required a lot of rail work.....
