Small Ring Intermediate Mauser Actions

My gunsmith showed me what I think was a 'small ring, intermediate length' mauser action the other day. It got me thinking that it might make a rather good basis for a light deer rifle in say 243

Can't tell you the make (as he's away) but I wondered how good such types of actions are and if there are any significant benefits regarding weight and length over a standard Argy 09.

Also does anyone make a magazine box etc tailored to fit or is it a case of a standard length Sunny Hill.

Apologies if this has been asked before.

A small ring action such as the G33-40 is 06 lenth and one of the finest Mausers every made..It makes up into a dandy lightweight rifle...

the Mexican actions are large ring actions (7x57)or midlenth and they are OK.

How can a complete novice, such as myself, identify an intermediate action? How about large ring Mausers with small ring barrels?

Thanks!

Brian,
LR with SR threads would be a Turkish action...

If you find an action just send me all the inscriptions off of it and I will identify it for you, or post here and someone will tell you what you have. You can also buy the Mauser book by ?? (help someone) and it will give you all the scoop.

I'm interested in stocking a small ring mauser in 7X57 for a lightweight bang-around rifle. Does anyone know the standard twist rates in military barrels? Do they vary at all?

There are also Large Ring "intermediate length" M98 action, but I think these are strictly commercial actions such as the Yugoslavian VZ 500. The magazine well measures 3.225" as opposed to 3.315" for the "standard length".

GSF,
actually the Mexicans are large ring short actions, nice for 308 243 etc. they were originally 7x57 so they except mid lenth rounds also, even 06 with a litte trim. they are short in outside lenth and require a different stock than the Mod 98.

The small rings are 1935 Custom Agency Mausers, G33-40 (they are the same action.) The 21M and 22F Commercial Brno double square bridge Mausers and thats all that comes to me right now.

I'll have to go along with GSF1200 on the Mex. Actions. I got three sitting here all small ring, intermediate length(some refer to them as short length). Model 1936 Mexican M98.
Ray- see JBelk he's got one of mine he's working on a 1936 model.
Can squeeze these SR mex into a Sweedish 96 mauser in a pinch.
Bob.

I just remembered, I have another 1910 mexican, it's got a 7.62x39 barrel on it. Bought it from Century a few years back, new stock, low bolt handle, scope safety, $200, it will put 5 shots in an 1" at 100yds, mild recoil, and cheap to shoot. Tonight I just won a bid on another 1936 Mexican with a 7mm-08 barrel!

Hey Bear Claw, you live close to me. i live in Carencro. Where do you shoot? They closed our range in Lafayette.

I know Mike, he has worked on a few guns for me. He moved his shop to Abbeville, so I don't stop in as much, as I used to. Do you have a shop in Jennings? I got the Mexican Mauser off Auction Arms.
