I am about to pick up a mid 60's vintage remington 700 (short action?)in 6mm rem. I am considering chambering to 6mm-284. Is this a conversion worth attempting? Weather I rechamber or rebarrel has yet to be decided. I am mostly concerned about feeding problems.

I don't think the conversion is worth it.

The 6mm Remington is probably as good a 6mm cartridge as you could want.

Spend your money a the optics.

and I agree.....in truth it's hard to significantly improve on the standard 6MM rem

Well read those 6MM/284 loads and weep. They will beat yours and my 6MM by at least 200 + fps. The 6 is a very good gun but it's not the only game in town.

Most standard 6mm's come with a 1 in 9 twist the older .244 with 1 in 10. I'll tell you right now go to a 28" barrel and at least a 1 in 8 twist. Lose that old 6MM barrel. Maybe one of these guys will buy it from you lol

The project is not optics.

This rifle will be changed to something different.

The question is will the 6-284 case fit in the package with out a barrel change.

My first thought was to ditch the .243 barrel and go with something that will push a 140+ grain bullets at least 2600 fps

I really like the .284 win but I like the .35 whelen better but it just won't fit in this action.

What case can fit in this action with the most amount of powder and bullet size that won't slow down below 2600fps at the muzzle?

Honestly I have never wanted a 6mm bore. It's just too small but the rifle is a real deal.

Personally, I wouldn't mess with a Classic like that... unless the barrel is just plain shot out...

Even then, a 6mm Rem is plenty before you hit overbore problems...

If you want the equivalent, then consider the 243 A/I and the 6mm A/I....

I looked at it, and went with a 6mm Rem on a long action.. which I maintain, trumps a 6/284 logic......

Well, you've gotten a lot of opinions, but not much that addresses your question.

1. Rechambering is likely not an very good option in that the 6mm case is already longer than a .284 case. Setting back the barrel enough to clean up the old chamber would likely make it poorly fit the existing barrel channel.

2. If rebarreled, the .284 case can be made to feed from the 700 magazine, but it takes some judicious (though not complicated) gunsmithing. Your magazine capacity will be reduced to no more than three rounds.

3. Your original 6mm barrel, if a sporter, will be only 20 or 22 inches, depending on its vintage. Most people would consider either too short for a cartridge the capacity of the 6mm/284.

4. A 6mm AI will provide very similar velocities to a 6mm/284 and will not require any magazine modificatons. If I wanted a hot 6mm, that's probably what I would do, if using a short action. For a long action, just go ahead and do a 6mm/06.

5. It's your money. Do whatever pleases you.

Okay, a .35/284 would be close to duplicating a .35 Whelen in this action (check the ballistics on the very similar .350 Rem Mag). You could build a .35 wildcat on a .300 SAUM case that would slightly exceed Whelen velocities, but then you get into some serious bolt face and magazine alterations and your magazine capacity would likely top out at two.

This is beginning to sound like a not so good idea. My biggest problem in this case is I just can't leave stuff alone. 5 years ago I got a 67 mustang from an aunt who had it stored since 1970 when my cousin was killed in nam. It had about 18000 miles on that old 200cid inline 6. I promptly crammed a 5.0 from a 1998 stang. That thing was a rocket. It's the same thing with guns. Pull the barrel and make a hotrod. Maybe I'll just leave this alone............maybe
