Have one of these actions and curious if one should consider having it surface ground and heat treated?? I am told it RC's in the mid 20's and wonder why one would heat treat if it is apparently suitable for rebarreling to a modern cartridge?? Any help, assistance, knowledge here would be appreciated. Where is that moderator when you need him!!

This subject has been discussed over and over again here. I'll try to summarize the two dominant schools:

1) Mauser actions are all surface hardened so they have a hard wear-resistant surface and strong core. The critical points of the action which require this hard surface are unaffected by grinding so therefore no re-hardening is needed following grinding.

2) All Mauser actions must be thoroughly re-heat treated before being suitable for any custom rifle.

Make you pick and take your chances.

Thanks for the response and would you care to point me in the right direction to have the heat treating performed and the surface grinding as well??

If you read back through his posts you'll see that Mike McCabe does this. He posts here as z1r.

It has been suggested on this forum that the only reason Mausers were surface hardened was for rust resistance.
