New barrel for my project

Gents:

Could use your input: I am beginning my project on my 300 win mag conversion to 375 H&H. This questions surrounds the barrel:

I am thinking I want to use a 22" barrel. Can any of you offer suggestions/recommendations as to contour and size at the muzzle? I certainly don't want it to be muzzle heavy; I am looking to create a rifle with the balance point between my hands.

Thanks.

in normal calibers I usually prefer Heavy Magnm contour barrels...

For a project like that, I'd consider a Varmint Weight barrel as it will be a little heavier than a Heavy magnum weight barrel ( contradictory huh?.. the manufacturers name it, not me..)

I once handled and shot a 375 H & H chamber Sako like that, but the barrel was cut to 20 inches.. it was far from NOSE heavy... it handled very well... and worked just fine on the 200 yd targets we were shooting at...

It seemed to have a big push to its recoil instead of a sharp rap like the 300 Mags do...

I'm one of those people who like a #4 contour for .375 cal rifles. Mine are all 22 inches in length, although some people like longer barrels.

My .375 H&H barrel is a Dougles #3 contour 23" long with a muzzle of .670. IIRC it was the lightest Douglas I could get but I like to make guns light as I can always add weight fore and aft at the end of the project if I want.

I can also achieve balancing too by adding lead weights at the end of the project.

I just mill pockets in the forend and butt stock and epoxy in lead shot. It's a lot easier to add weight than remove it!

jsl.....An AAHE Parker should balance "between the hands"........ A big game hunting rifle to be shot offhand should have "hang"....should be muzzle heavy. Shoulder an older Mauser built for African hunting, by one of the English builders........25 to 27 inch rather slim long barrel; wonderful balance, long sight radius, burns powder completely, less muzzle blast.... Steadies on the shoulder of that buff like a rock.......... JMHO......Grant.

Use a 26" Lothar-Walther USA barrel. Woody and the guys over in Georgia make a heck of a good barrel. I've purchased 2 of his .423 barrels and I will soon own 3 of his .257 barrels.

An excellent product at a reasonable price.
