Who can you recommend? I already know Scrollcutter is too backed up or I would have sent my rifle to him.

Rifle will need rust blueing after it is cut up.

I had some great work done by NECG close to you. They had the actual engraving done by Claus Weiling in Germany. The work is outstanding and the price was fair. I have a Ruger #l Paul Jager built for me that I loved to hunt prairie goats with. I took a very nice one (uniform and pretty horns) in New Mexico and I had photos of the head and the plains area where he was taken. I provided these to them and one side has his head in great detail (including a side cutter) and the other has him running with the background from the picture of the plains and rising messa in the background.

Ann:

I can highly recommend Mr. Ken Hurst. His work is excellent. I don't know how far behind he is be he seems to turn work pretty quickly. He can be reached at 910-221-5288

I will try to attach a picture of his work...

Something to think about.....

I don't know those other folks.....(their work is nice I admit) but I do feel like I know Scrollcutter.....he posts here and seems a real gentleman and I've seen his work.....it's beautiful!!!..Personally, I'd get in line and wait for his work.....you can use the gun "as-is" until then.

I look at some of my guns and take pride not only in the appearance and performance but also in knowing the folks that contributed the art they show. It makes the gun a "more valued" work to me. When I see a great checkering job I see more than that.....I'm reminded of an old friend....or at least someone I've met and for whom I have a special appreciation.

If you do this you don't wind up with a gun.....you wind up with an heirloom.

I agree with Vapodog on the gun being more special if you have a relationship with the person doing the work, and since he is familiar to you through the forum would encourage you to look at Scrollcutter.

If time is an issue, I would suggest that you talk with Charles Lee. I have had Charles do several guns for me, and have always been very pleased with the quality, the price, and the turnaround time. Charles can be reached at (209) 763-5192. Charles worked as an engraver for Purdy in England before moving to the United States. If you do a search by my user name or if you look at some of the guns that ForrestB has posted pictures of, you can see what Charles' work looks like.

Charles works out of Commanche Hills here in California where my daughter and I hunt, so I see and visit with him on a regular basis. Since I know Charles personally, I am a bit biased in his favor. Still, I don't think that you would have any cause to complain if you use him.

If you guys call Ken Hurst, in about 15 minutes you will feel you have had a relationship with him for a few hundred years. He's a good guy, and well known among the singleshot folks.

HST is pretty well known for his gunwork too as a matter of fact. Not to mention he is rumored to shoot pretty well too Wink

Ann:

I will second Mark Swanson's skills as he did the engraving on my .577 in the link Lee posted.

Good luck with your decision.

You sure can't go wrong using Winston Churchill.
Another guy you might try is Ben Lane if he is still at it. they both did some work for me in the '70's.
