What round to use in M98 action?

I'm looking for a larger than .30 round for a 1938 JP Sauer & Sohn kar98k action I have.

I've already got a .35 Whelen on a 1909 Argie, so that caliber is out.

I'd like to use the action as-is without lengthening the receiver or mag box, so what's out there for choices?

Definitely don't want any vanilla calibers and by that I mean any calibers you can buy a Remington 700 or Winchester 70 in.

Something on the larger side is preferable, possibly one of the 9.3 rounds.

Any suggestions?

9.3 x 57 is the obvious choice.
.375-06 AI for a wild cat.
or 9 x 57 for a nice classic that duplicates the .358 Winchester.

Rusty ahs some good ideas, there.. the 9,3x57 is a neat round, and mroe than enough for most north american hunting.

what length is the mag? about the largest non-wildcat you can stuff in that, without mods, will be the 9,3x62, if you have a 3.4 or so box, which you sauer MIGHT have.

the 9,3x64 has a ~.5" casehead, and won't work on the boltface, with out mods.

if you are willing to go that far, then then 10.75x68 is a pretty easy one as well.

For wildcats you have

Hmmm... well, so far 9.3x62 is the round that's most tickling my fancy. the wildcat Whelens are interesting, but .375W and .400W seem like they might be tough to find dies for, no?

No, it is definitely the 338 Federal case blown out to 338.

In a pinch though one could stoop to using .308 brass.

While I agree that there is nothing wrong with the 8x57 it is offered in the Rem 700. That said, the next obvious choice is the 9.3x57. While it is easily bested by its bigger relative the 9.3x62, it is a very pleasant round that would require less work to make feed. Not that the 9.3x62 is much harder.

I just got back from a trip to the range with my Husky M46 in 9.3x57. Even with the getting hard to see iron sights it shot 1.5" groups to point of aim at 100 meters.

I would go with the 9,3x62. It is a great hunting round.....
However take a look at the 10.75 Mauser.
With todays bullets it is a good choice.

Of course, I could always just make it a 7x57 and engrave .275 Rigby on the side...

I like that idea too!

Ruger did that about a year ago with a batch of No.1's, I never was able to hunt one of those down.

In wildcats, I think a 416 Taylor would fit with the bolt face slightly opened up. Or you could go with an exotic like the .458 African Express Rimless which uses the 404 Jeffery case as its parent cartridge. It gives the same muzzle velocity as the .458 Lott in a standard length action and there is nothing "plain vanilla" about it. If you want to keep things simple and adapted to US or medium game animals, have it chambered for .280 Ackley Improved or a 338-06.

These are all classic calibers except the
VON HOFE.
What type of rifle(style) are you planning on building?
A classic british/mauser or something German(preussish)?

At this point, it will likely be a rifle in the British classic style.

Either in a 7mm round or in a boomer .35 and up. We'll see, still not ordering the bbl for a coupla months so lots of time to decide!
