Hello!
I want to built my first Custom rifle. I think the Montana 1999 system would be fine. My favorite caliber is the 9,3x64 Brenneke. Does someone know if it is possible to use the 1999 for the 9,3x64 or are there any problems? -

The Montana 1999 is very well suited for the 9.3x64. It should make a great one.

Jack,

I enjoyed meeting you at the show last weekend, and I'm not going to tell people about the .41 Mag so the line doesn't get longer!

Would you be so kind as to compare the M99 action with the pre-'64 Winchester?

thanks...jim

Jack,

HunterJim took the words right out of my mouth. I am also curious to hear your assesment of a M1999 compaired and contrasted to a Pre-64 M70.

Thanks,
Dave

Thanks for asking----

The Montana action "looks" like a M-70, but looks and some common parts is as far as it goes.

The Montana 1999 takes the M-70 design back to the M-98 basics instead of relying on the intervening 1903 Springfield design.

The Montana has an inner "C" ring that makes it more a child of the 98 than the other two. It also has a "dovetailed" left lug much like the old Husquvarna and another anti-bind device on the right lug which makes the stability of the bolt, when withdrawn, VERY tight and smooth.

The main difference is in the ability of the Montana to slow, divert, interrupt, and deflect any gas that escapes from a split, seperated or blown primer or case. The bolt carries a new Classic M-70-style gas block held in the left rail by the extractor collar. This block is designed to break free from the ring and be carried with the gas further into the left rail until it fetches up at the new and VERY improved Sako-style bolt stop. Anything that escapes from that log jam is deflected by the shroud, which has no shroud lock on the outside......so no shroud lock missles flying into the right eye as is pretty common in old Winchesters.

The Montana is inherently stronger and safer, by design, than the M-70.....much more so than the Pre-64 M-70s. Feeding and other operations should be just as reliable and smooth as the Winchesters and the longivety and value is therefore higher than the M-70.

The Montana M-1999 is, in every way but heritage, a better and more desireable action than the Model 70 in my opinion. I'm looking forward to useing one soon for a full custom rifle.

Jack,

Thank you for writing your analysis up and posting it. It is easy for rifle users to get hung up on the external appearance of an action, and to forget about important design considerations that don't manifest themselves until a serious failure occurs.

Mr. Belk, some friends and I thank you for your explicit descriptions how the Montana action works. It helped us decide to order a couple, and feel somewhat safe doing so. We are smiling [Big Grin]
