Removing a Mauser sight

Ok, trying to figure out how to remove a rear tangent site from a Mauser -- I have one of the 98/22 rifles that has had the Arabic lettered rear sight removed and replaced with english (?) letters, and I want to put one with Arabic numerals back on. I drove out the skinny pin, but the sight still isn't loose. What else do you have to do to get it off? [Confused] [Confused]

Thanks,
Todd

Todd, you have to push down at the front of the sight and in a rearward direction. It is a heavy spring that loads it up into a slot. You have to overcome the spring presure upward and at the same time push it back toward the receiver. [Wink]

Todd make sure the barrel in held securly in a vise. I got a nasty hole in my hand from learning the hard way 30 years ago. It took 10 stitches to close it up. I've since modified a "C" clamp to depress the ladder & hold it in position while I tap the ladder to the rear. They go on MUCH easier they come off. Don't be alarmed if the "bed" (the piece under the ladder & containing the leaf spring that holds tention on the ladder) comes off after the ladder is removed. Just place it back in position before you install the Arabic ladder.

Todd,

I have resorted to taking a small block of wood about 5/16 square or a similar size piece of dowel, and placing this at an angle at the front of the sight and with one fell swoop of a hammer, knocking it down and out towards the receiver. This compresses the spring and moves it backwards out of it's slot and works quite well...

Thanks guys, I will try this tomorrow. Hoping to hit the range Saturday, I guess the numbering on the sight is irrelevant as far as shooting goes [Wink] but I might as well have it the way I like it.

Todd,

The sight bed of your rifle was most probably replaced or altered when the sight leaf was replaced. I believe the original sights were calibrated for 2-300 meters minimum setting and the replacements were calibrated at 100 meters minimum. If you replace the ladder portion with the original it may not regulate on-target. I had one of those rifles several years ago and the sight bed had also been replaced.

Thanks Bobster! I forgot about the replacement later. Excellent point!

Well, things went smoothly today. I see what you mean Doug about that spring being in a great spot to gash your palm. If I am interpreting the arabic numerals correctly, both are calibrated starting at 400 yards. I may replace the front sight post to get it on target at 100 yards, depending on where it shoots to start with [Wink]

Thanks guys.
