What do you guys think of this pre-64 Win M70 takedown .375 H&H by Griffin & Howe?

Very nice.

But why the side mount? Seems unnessary.

If that rifle costs $5,000 rifle or more, I'd rather take the same money and go to Roger Biesen for a custom 375 H&H.

Several reasons: I don't care for or trust take-down systems for bolt action rifles; I'd rather have a modern custom barrel that's fitted with truly useful open sights, rather than a pre-64 factory barrel and those small & low factory roll-over open sights, plus I like Biesen's stock shape and over-all workmanship much better than G&H's.

I think the main attraction is that it is a "take down" in a major caliber. Obviously if you don't like take downs or don't want a 375 then you won't like this. I like it! I have alsways wanted a take down (since a read a James Bond book where he had a Mannlicher take down) in a useful caliber. I suspect that it is perhaps worth $5K, and the name caries some of that. New takedowns cost around $3.5K to $4K I believe and are not in a major caliber.

Allen, just curious do you have any of his fathers Al Biesen's rifles?

Does anyone know what a takedown like this would cost from one of the ACGG smiths?

500Grains,
Duane Weibe does them and in fact is a master at them. I have seen a couple that he did but I would only be guessing. I expect that ForrestB would know.

A Duane Wiebe take down DGR would run you $8-10K and be worth every penny of it.

Duane has built one take-down for me and I've handled a few others that he's built. I think the take-down option adds a couple thousand to the price of a given rifle.

I'd only want a take-down on a C-ring mauser. On a Winchester, you'll eventually get headspace issues and you can't take up that slack because the lugs lock-up in the barrel. $5,000 is a bargain for the right take-down, but I wouldn't pay that much for the G&H shown unless your interest is purely that of a collector.

PM me and I can give you lots of ill-informed detail.

500gns,
A best grade T/D from Martini/Hagn on a 98 or Hagn singleshot hovers around the $14,000 mark.(fixed barrels around 9K)
But they are aworld apart from that G&H. An extra stocked T/D barrel alone from Martini/Hagn costs around $4,000. if you want integral/rib/sight/b-band, its $5,000. So about $20,000 will get you a Martini Hagn switch barrel(2) set-up,all with/with all integrals.
At SCI this year I Looked at t/ds'from Granite Mountain,HartmannWeiss,Martini/Hagn and others. Ralf martinis' work I found the best. Threads were much closer fitting than the others. Good fellow to Talk to as well, actually listens to the customer! Although the t/d work he had on show was excellent He was willing to make the threads to my spec(tighter) if desired. He belives like me that the threads should be as close fitting as possible with absolute minimum of play. H&W threads I found alittle too lose for my liking especially on a $32K magnum mauser.Unfortunately H&W have salesmen displaying the rifles, and to be honest, it is a complete fucking waste of time talking to them. I would just get Ralf to get the HW action and let him do the work. With Martini Hagn you talk with the craftsman, and so you should. So far I have not handled Duanes' work to be able to comment. At this point, If I was to pass the money over, it would be to Ralf.

Fred Zeglin in Casper Wyoming is now making take downs...

Not sure of the price...but he does great work

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

I would not have a DGR in a take down version, I have never seen one that satisfied me for accuracy for very long, they tend to wear and anything that moves is not for me...
