Id like to see what you all think its worth before i disclose what i gave. Is it a military rework? The bolt handle has some stamps on it. That is Argentine bottom medal correct?

The BUGN proofs identify the action as commercial. Of course, during the rearmament runup many "commercial" rifles were not sold to civilians.

It has an FN Commerical bolt. Assuming the shroud is original to the bolt, an FN Supreme.

Argie bottom metal.

Nice.

I'd say the sum of the parts would be worth at least $600 or more.

Nice clean receivers like that aren't too easy to find anymore. When you do, the price usually reflects it.

Good buy; it is not a commercial mauser sporter; it is a 1934 Alternate Standard Modell; really the first 98ks and made for the Reichspost to guard mail trains, That was the cover story anyway. BUGN proofs were used on all Standard Modells, both the 1933 and 1934 variants. Most of the 1933 Standard Modells went to Spain. In 1934 Mauser and others, started making the same rifle for the Army, with non-commercial markings. The bolt is not original (FN) and the bottom metal, as you say, is Argentine 1909. The DSTs are not original either.

So im thinking about doing this with this action... What say ye?

Open sighted 404, 458, 338 norma or 8x68s
Or scope the thing with 338 norma or 8x68s
My eyes aint what they use to be and Im of the scope generation.

I vote 8x68 with scope. It has been designed to fit in this action very easy.

You're not goint to D & T the receiver and then cover up the Banner with a scope base are you? If you must scope it, use a side mount like a EAW Side Mount. I like the Griffin & Howe Sidemount but I don't think it will work on a Mauser with a thumb notch.

I might cover it up... I really dont care... Or Id trade it for the right gun. I like husqvarnas and fN and BRNO. Or a nice savage 99' or a nice marlin 29A, or a nice double shotgun, or a purdy or holand and holand. Smiler

After using a 404 Jeffery in Mozambique, I would highly recommend it.

Also, I would hate to cover up the Banner as mentioned above, I think I would go with a quality QD side mount with a straight tubed scope in the 1 to 4 or 1.5 to 6x range.

I would have very good express sights, and stock it in the British Tradition, ie very little wood, skinny fore end.

It seems to be a mix of parts found laying, randomly around in the workshop.
Dont attempt to use it without propper check of both fitt and function.
I dont like the mix of a set trigger, combined with no safety at all.
The Price should be less than 50$

You are correct that it is a mix of parts. Even so the parts are of high enough quality to justify the price of $400. Realistically the 09 bottom metal is worth +-$150 and with set trigger the bottom metal unit would sell for +-$250.

That receiver without a bolt would probably fetch +-$200.

The FN bolt is not correct but if the handle were replaced it will make no difference.

$400 was a fair price.

On rifles like that; just don't load it until you are ready to shoot it.
If you are going to drill through the banner, or even cover it up, I recommend trading it to someone for a vz24 or something else.

Thank you for the kind reply

For manny years i have bought, complete an pristine mauser/FN/Husquarna m98 rifles in Sweden for prices around 40$ up to 150$. They are sold in bunches for that Price.
For comparing a new Tikka T3 costs about 1500$ to 2000$. A Hardley Ableson Remmington costs from 1200$ and up.

It is a stange World. An American would only pay 500$ for a new decent rifle, but is willing to pay the same amount for a pile of old steel. That would cost a fortune, to bring back to function.

Those Husqvarna's may indeed sell for $50 in Sweden but once bought there for next to nothing they are brought back here to the US and sold for what they are worth.

Today a saw a lightly used Stainless Rem 700 in .300 Win Mag for $450. My Husqvarna's will sell for more. Supply and demand, plain and simple.

Additionally, many folks appreciate the quality of the old FN's. Husqvarnas, and Mausers.

For most of my shooting and all my hinting, a good old Mauser will fit the bill just fine.

I gave $175.00 for mine. Problem is it has about 6 holes in the rear reciever ring and the banner has a hole in it too. Maybe I can get a skilled smith to tig the holes and make it look decent?

In a day or two this will be parted out and sold in three lots. After looking at my 3 1640 husqvarnas i have decided to finish the two 1640 projects before moving on to something else. The action may be spoken for, still talking out the details.
