Any tricks for removing adhesive from a scope without harming the finish? Someone needs to come up with a removable adhesive for scope rings.

Goo Gone might work. Amazing stuff.

Although WD40 gets a bad rap for use on guns, it has it's place. It does a good job on removing adhesives like you describe. Spray a little on the sticky stuff then brush it with a GI toothbrush. You may have to let it sit a little or use more than one application, but it won't hurt your scope finish.

It's also good for washing stock oil off your hands when finishing.

Good old fashioned turpentine works well for such jobs.

Order of substances I use for adhesive removal is:

1) Lighter fluid or coleman fuel
2) Paint Thinner
3) Turpentine
4) WD40 or Silicone spray
5) Acetone
6) Goop remover solvent
7) MEK
8) Abrasives

This is the order I have come to on least likely to damage or affect the finish. Reason the sprays are lower on the list is potential bench contamination, particularly with silicones. This can affect gluing things later.
