Hi all, I came across a second hand Remington 700 in 7mmRM today for what I consider a "just above stealing" price ($359). It's new enough of a 700 to have allen head action screws and a J-lock bolt. From the shape of the foreend of the stock this left the factory as a 700Mountain rifle but the barrel has been replaced with a medium heavy straight taper barrel that's .750" at the muzzle with an 11degree crown. The stock has obviously been inletted for the fatter barrel and the action has been bedded for the full length of the receiver and the first two inches of the barrel shank... The barrel is not stamped but is instead those dark "etched" (EDM? Laser?) letters marking it for caliber and the mark " V.P. " apparrently for the barrel maker or gunsmith.... First the obvious question, does anyone have a clue who " V.P." is? I suspect it's Vincent Precision, but... the other, how are those dark letters made on stainless steel? I'm asking now only because it never occoured to me to wonder about it until now. AllanD If I provoke you into thinking then I've done my good deed for the day! "VP" might be a proof mark, meaning originally, "Verified Proof". Good luck, and good shooting. Jim

I use an electro-chemical etching system to mark my barrels.

No, t looks like someone was being "minimalist" in signing their work. Someone suggested that it's the mark of Vincent Precision (gunsmithing). And that it's likely a Douglas barrel as that's (supposedly) what Gary Vincent uses most often. AllanD If I provoke you into thinking then I've done my good deed for the day!
