Scope base directly on barrel?

I am looking to build a scout-type rifle on a Remington action, and have run into some problems finding a low enough scope base of decent quality.
I need to mount an Intermediate Eye Relief scope in front of the receiver, as low as possible.
Would there be a problem in having a gunsmith machine a base and mount it directly to the barrel? Any trouble with accuracy?

To my knowledge no one makes machined bases for the remington that will produce a proper scout! There are some that may come close, but are not correct.
Here is what I did. Remove the stock remington rear sight and remove the sliding sight. Buy a steel Warne weaver base and TIG weld it to the remington base mounted in reverse. USE a steel Rule to make sure that a warne steel base mounted on the receiver ring and your new base (to be welded to the reversed ramp) are parrallel to each other and at the correct height. This is actually much easier to see than to visualize. I used two weaver extended rings to mount a Burris 2-7X EER scope to the remington with the rear bell exactly over the receiver ring and about 1/4 inch high. Man is it slick to shoot and carry! A Ching sling and chop the barrel to 20 inches in .308 and you nearly have an ideal scout.-Rob

Kevral,

You could also try the Ching Ring mount.

I built a scout on a Tikka battue and used the rib from a Ruger No. 1 as the base. It fit perfectly on that barrel.

Or, use the Burris scout base. It requires a fair amount of machining to lay low and precisely fit the contour of the Remington barrel, but if done correctly then a clearance of .050 over the receivers bridge is easily attainable. There is no problem mounting directly to the barrel.

Good luck,

I know of both the Ching and Burris mounts; they were the ones I liked the best of what I could find. Think I want something even smoother, though, and since I need to rebarrel anyway I thought I'd see if the 'smith could make something that attached directly to the barrel.

Gunsite's smithy useta sell rifles (and barrels, I believe) with pedestals machined in the appropriate places, so I doubt mounting the scope on the barrel presents a real accuracy problem.

I tried much the same thing on a 700 by using a one-piece base that stretched from the front receiver ring to the rear sight base, utilizing the holes already there.

It worked in a technical sense but it was not the lively Perazzi birdgun I had hoped for. Oh well. The biggest problem was that the scope was by necessity up higher than I liked.

If you wanna try this on the cheap, let me know and I'll sell you this base. $10 shipped anywhere. Such a deal!

Scopes are mounted on the barrels of Thompson Contenders and Encores with no accuracy problems.
