Timney Triggers and Ruger Installation Question

I received my Ruger Special Edition 35 Whelen back and the fixed the misfire problem. They replaced the firing pin and spring. You pull the trigger and it goes, BANG! Perfect. The trigger is the problem.

This is an honest 1/2" shooter with Federal Premium 225 gr. TBBC's. No exaggeration. My reloads so far are about 2 1/2" at best, I think I know the problem and most of my other rifles vary between 1 1/4" to 2 1/2". Ironically, this is the only rifle that I have not had the trigger worked over. The trigger feels like it is about 15 lbs or more. The gun has not been bedded. The only thing I have done is mount a 6x36mm Leupold and break-in the barrel. After I found out how it shoots, I'm terrified of jacking with it. But the trigger really bugs me.

How hard is it to replace the trigger and set it to about 3 lbs with a Timney on a Ruger 77 MKII? I am not a shade tree gunsmith by any stretch. I can mount a scope and clean a rifle properly. That is about the extent of my experience. While we are at it. How hard is it to replace the trigger on a Ruger with the tang safety? Any help is greatly appreciated.

FYI. I would normally take my stuff to my gunsmith, Speedy Gonzalez. But getting the rifles out of his shop is anything but speedy. No criticism of Speedy. He is just covered up.

Longbob,

I installed a Timney Trigger last week on a Ruger M77 Mk11 last week, not really that big of a deal.....but there is NO room for error in fitting the triggers saftey tab to the safety selector. You want just enough clearance for the safety to engage smoothly without allowing the trigger to pivot enough to let off.

Also you will have to do a small amount of inletting to allow for the overtravel screw mounting lug.

At one time Timney would install their triggers for a reasonable fee....maybe they still do.

I used the the trigger spring that came with the trigger, which gives me about a 2lb pull....you can use the factory spring for a higher pull weight if you like.

Good luck,

I have replaced three or four Ruger factory triggers with Timneys. They are a little bit trickier than most others. If you don't feel confident about doing it send it to Timney or your local 'smith.

What is Timney's turnaround time if I send the rifles to them? This may be my best option.
