From Antique Firearms Assembly/Disassembly by David Chicoine: "Unscrew and remove the joint pivot screw from the left side of the hinge on the frame and use an appropriate straight punch to drive the joint pivot out of the frame toward the right side. Make note of the witness mark on the joint pivot and its corresponding mark on the frame; these marks must be aligned for reassembly." From this I would guess the screw is right handed.

Is this a Smith & Wesson? If so, I would try contacting them. If it's an Italian copy, by Uberti, I would try Beretta, which now owns Uberti. Good luck. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

Don't know about the Schofield but IIRC at least some of the later S&Ws used left-hand threads in the hinge screw. I'm not surprised at the lack of info in the book, I haven't found it to be very useful but that my be just me.
