mexican mauser triggers

If you read my previous post, you know that I have been having trouble with an older canjar trigger on a sporterized mauser. I contacted canjar, but I have decided to scrap the trigger and start anew. I just don't want to have any second thoughts about the function of the rifle, as it is my fiance's main hunting gun.

I have two questions. First, the action is slightly shorter than my other 98 mauser. Does this in fact make it a mexican mauser? I believe it is also stamped "something, something, fabrica mexico" on the reciever. I didn't have time to pull the scope and bases off to verify though.

If it is in fact a mexican mauser, do I need a trigger specifically for it, or will any aftermarket 98 trigger work? Are most aftermarket triggers drop in, or would I be wise to take it to a smith. I will need one with an integral safety, as the shroud does not have one. I have experience with my model 700 triggers, but this is the first mauser that I have worked on.

Thanks for the thoughts and replies.

Gib

Is it a small ring or a large ring? What year is marked on the front receiver ring? Does it have the Springfield type cocking piece or not? This will narrow it down a tad. - Dan

Dan-

This goes to show how little I honestly know about the variations of Mauser rifles! [Smile]

How do I tell if it is a large or small ring?

No, it doesn't have a springfield type cocking piece. I'm not near the rifle right now, but I'll check on the year and get back to you on that.

Thanks for the reply - Gib

Gib, Timney has a trigger that fits the Mexican 98 Mauser. Brownells has them.

Gib - The correct Timney trigger will fit up to the action without any trouble or modifications necessary. Where you may encounter problems is in getting the barreled action back into the stock. You may have to remove some wood around the trigger housing to get it back together. Or...you may not have a problem at all. [Razz]
