I'm interested in learning the basics of gunsmithing. Are there any books out there that speak with authority in this field? If so, I'd like to know what they are. Thanks.

Buy Roy Dunlap, GUNSMITHING!! It is the best to start out as a first. Several others like MacFarland's SIMPLIFIED GUNSMITHING if you can find a copy.

You may also want to check out American Gunsmithing Institute or AGI for short. They put out a lot of videos on gunsmithing topics.

Try finding "The Modern Gunsmith" by James V. Howe. It is like Dunlap's book and very basic but written a long while back when the "basics" were new stuff. He writes very methodically and so you will pick up intricate detail about how to make everything rather than just buying and using. Frank

If you're working with Mausers, you may find "The Mauser Bolt Actions, A shop manual" by Jerry Kuhnhausen to be useful. I also have a copy of "Do-It-Yourself Gunsmithing" by Jim Carmichel that's got some interesting tid bits it as well. Jason "Chance favors the prepared mind."

If you have any interest at all in SxS shotguns, hands down the best book for care & feeding is AMATEUR GUNSMITHING by Mills and Barnes. Step by step instructions with photos to tear down, clean and reassemble boxlocks and sidelocks plus some other tidbits. Comes up on Abebooks, a bit expensive and will probably come from the UK.
