404 Jeffery follower question
I have a 404 Jeffery project I need help on. M70 270 classic re-barreled by Harry McGowen to 404 Jeffery. He has it now doing feed work on it. The hangup is the magazine follower, having a hard time finding an ultramag follower. Will a standard mag follower work? What have those of you who have ventured down this path done? Thanks for your help, Russ Green.

You might try Montana Rifle Company for a follower.

you need a RUM follower, from winchester or remington.

What my evil cousin jeffe says.

Easier finding a Remington these days.

If no luck there we could make some lost wax castings.........

I put a WTB for a factory Winchester RUM follower in the classifieds here. I got a mag box and follower for $50.00, and I am glad I did.

as Jeffe said, a win Rum follower is the ticket, that what I use in my 404, but they are probably pretty scarce. I'd try to get a Rem, might take some work to get it to fit, I've never tried it.

The Remington RUM follower is the exact same as any regular magnum.

The Winchester RUM follower is wider that the aluminum 416 follower and probably could be TIGed up and reshaped.

I would try getting the Win box and follower from USRAC directly. I got mine from them even though the phone fool said they were out.

Here are some pictures (duh):

A standard pot metal follower for a 30-06 class cartridge is on the left, a long magnum follower is in the center, and the RUM is on the right.

etc.

and so on.

It looks like your best bet may be to get a long magnum follower, and modify it slightly to RUM specifications.

I just finished three hours of paperwork for those medicare bastards, so I am going home.

HT,

If you end up with a regular long magnum follower from Winchester/Browning/USRAC/FN I would be happy to send you all the dimensional differences so you can reshape it to RUM/404J specs. They are made out of Aluminum, so it shouldn't be too hard.

jeffe,

I have a weird computer. No porn, but lots of pictures of gun parts and ballistics charts. I guess your chart is my porn Big Grin.
