Anyone familiar with this firearm???

One has been passed on to a family member in 300 Win Mag...

Markings on it, say:
Kanematsu Gosho
Arlington Hts. Ill

Nikko Model 7000
Golden Eagle...

This puppy is in excellent shape, not showing much use, the stock shows wear from sitting in the closet and getting knocked around by the former owners, wife I am sure....

Thanks in advance for any and all info anyone has on this rifle... I was looking to find another stock for it and was looking to see if it is the same as a Weatherby or a Browning BBR or....who knows.

cheers

seafire, Used to have one in 375H&H, gorgeous stock, kicked like a mule, well, it's got twice the recoil of an 06, no wonder it gave me a headache after 4 shots. Anyway, the rifle is made in Japan, probably figured that out, huh? Seemed like it was a decent quality firearm. I'd say Nikko was trying to copy Weatherby. They're worth around $450-500, If I remember correctly. Jay

Superb rifles.
On par with any Weatherby Mark V.

Beautiful wood and flawless functioning.

Have 2 - one 375 H&H and the other a 300 Wby.

The 300 does have quite a kick to it, but the 375, with the gun being fairly heavy, is actually quite pleasant to shoot.

You got lucky.

My friend has one, I wasn't real impressed, Monte Carlo stocks and with funky rosewood tip and caps don't do it for me. I seem to recall the action has the locking lugs on the rear of the bolt and wasn't impressed there either.

The Golden Eagle rifle has locking lugs at the rear of the bolt I believe. Not like a Weatherby at all. It was sort of a modernized Shultz & Larson design. Action is quite massive and the rifles are a little heavy. action is also very strong. They were nicely finished but never really caught on. Check in De Haas's "bolt action rifles". I believe he describes this rifle completly.

Sorry this is a vague response, i am trading from memory as I write but I recall a recent (last 6 months) article in Magnum magazine from RSA in which a little of the history of the Golden Eagle rifle was discussed. Seems the rifle was made in Japan but after having had poor sales world-wide the close out rifles were offered to Winchester in limited calibres.

The rifle as sold with the Winchester name and was offered only until supplies of parts ran out at which point it died a death so to speak.

I think it was Brian Marsh? ( may have got the person wrong) as a young hunter at the time had one with the safari company he worked for, the calibre .458 Win Mag. With the monte carlo roll-over stock it kicked like a mule and was dubbed "The Golden Shite Hawk" by the other PH's,consequently no one would use it.

Sorry if I have got the names of the folks concerned wrong but the gist of the story is as told in Magnum

has been a very, very long time, 20 yrs perhaps but i'm almost positive i saw one of the winchester marked G/E's once and of course wondered "what the....?" and never could find out the story and had forgotten abt it. i almost bought one once when were available new but got something cheaper. but i like the california/weatherby look. as i recall de haas thought fairly highly of it. i've seen 2 recently at shows locally and i think "asking" prices were in the $550-650 range and i think one was a 7mag and the other some std cal. didn't see anybody BUY either one.
