My father needs a new barrel for his M-700. It is a 60's vintage 6mm. I would like to get him a standard contour take-off 308 barrel. He is far too cheap to spring for a top quality barrel and has always been satisfied with Remington factory barrels. Can anyone give sources for such barrels?

Check EBay, I just clicked on "Buy", then "Sporting Goods", then "Hunting" then typed in "Remington Barrel"

Here's a 308:

It'll take a "C" note or better to install that one since your smith must deal with the relief cut. It can be done but a shame that it was done.

I wouldn't pay much for it. There's alot of take off barrels out there for the M-700 as it's a popular action for target and varmint shooters.

What is the "relief cut"?

I was figuring on a simple swap and headspace ajustment as necssary. The rifle is an early 700, with out the antibind bolt. I assume The Numrich barrels are recent vintage. Are they compatable?

Numrich looks like they way to go. I am skitish about E-bay.

The threads are the same for “old†or “new†700’s.

I have no idea what relief cut you are asking about.

That particular ebay seller has been trying to get rid of those barrels for awhile.

Seems like some genius made a "relief cut" with what looks like a parting tool right in front of the lug.

Keep looking as there are quite a few 308 barrels on ebay. Usually feast or famine though.

Okay...sounds like the guy had trouble getting the barrels off and cut them to relieve some of the pressure.

Numrich’s recent catalog has factory new .308 take off barrels with standard contour at 22 inches for $61.45.

McCray I had the first link to the barrel with the relief cut but I then found another stock barrel and edited it.

Have bought several Remington take-off barrels at gun shows. Prices range from $15 to $75 with most in the $25 to $35 range. The higher priced ones are fluted stainless steel Sendoro barrels in Ultra Mag chamberings.

These should all be take-off barrels in new condition. No signs of shooting or heavy marks from removal.

Norman Johnson of Precision Shooting has been playing with Remington actions and take-off barrels for many years and has written about them frequently. Have talked to him directly about his experiences. If memory serves me, Johnson has never had a Remington barrel and Remington action from any time period that would not screw on within go no-go gauge tolerances without modification.

Your experiences may vary.

Sounds like a heck of a deal. No muss or fuss. Sure beats spending 300-bucks and doing a lot of lathe work. The Numrich ones look to be blued already, another plus.

For my father's purposes 1.5 moa will do just fine. All the Remington barrels, I have played with, will do that if bedded right. The one exception was defective, it was not bored properly. I would be surprized if a new 308 factory barrel, with taylored loads using ballistic tips, would not do much better.

I know I will have a jillion people likely jump down my throat for this....but I have never had to re-cut a chamber or barrel threads to get a Remington barrel to fit a factory standard Remington action within SAAMI headspace limits, either. (I have had to do it when I chose to use a thicker after-market recoil lug.)

That doesn't mean the lettering or the iron sight holes in the barrel always come up dead perfect when you screw the barrel in, but of the ones I have done, they have headspaced within the proper limits.

If you think about it, that just makes sense. I doubt that Remington wants to spend a lot of high dollar machinist time/money "custom fitting" each chamber in each rifle they turn out. So, with jigs, etc., all the ones which were actually on rifles which were sent from the factory to be sold are probably within the .006" or so tolerance allowed in headspacing to SAAMI standards. After all, it's a pretty danged poor set-up that won't hold .006" these days.

I have "take-off" barrels on rifles of vintage from the earlier M 722's to relatively recent M700's. In fact a few of my rifles have more than half-a-dozen barrels apiece alloted to their use, and I use them as "switch-barrel" guns.

OF COURSE none of the above means you should just screw a take-off barrel in and go shoot it without checking the headspace!! Your barrel and/or rifle might be the deadly exception(s) to the rule. Pay the gunsmith to check the headspace if you can't do it yourself. It's cheap insurance for the only body you have (or are likely to get).

Added note in response to the comment about the Numerich barrels already being blued... ALL true "take-off" barrels are complete with the final finish Remington originally applies to them...After all, they WERE on completed guns which were sold as whole guns of one designation or another. They are just removed from the original guns (taken off) to use the Remington action for some other purpose...usually building a custom or semi-custom rifle to the owner's own particular specs. Frequently they have never been fired other than when Remington "prooved" them prior to shipping. So, if the gunsmith doesn't mar the finish while taking the barrel off, the finish should be as good as new...because it IS new.

Would that include the left handed M-700 versions? I have a friend who is left handed. He has a right hand .375 H&H that he used left handed to kill his brown bear. He always wanted to match his left handed 7mm Mag. Much more convenient than working the bolt over the top. Smiler

In Remingtons there is no difference between right-handed and left-handed barrels.

And a 375 H&H length cartridge can be built on a 7mm Remington Magnum gun with no modifications

Have found 7mm, 300, and 338 Ultra Mag barrels and 7mm and 300 Rem Short Ultra Mag barrels.

But like you, have not found any 375 RUM.

If that is the same fellow I am thinking about then I know him. He frequents SLC gun shows and is a fantastic source of Remington take offs because he gets them from a friend who builds BMG rifles out of the actions and so he has a huge supply of NEW take offs for real good prices. Very nice gentleman too.

Ahh! I still have his card.
