Should anyone out there have or know of a source for Sako A-1 actions in .223 bolt face and with the detachable magazine, I would be interested in hearing about it. Send us an email, please.

Rod, or is this Larry using Rod's account?? The A1 action, as far as I know, did not come with a detachable magazine. You'll have to go back to the early L46 action to get a detachable magazine, and that action was really a tad short for a .223 - it was originally made for the Hornet, and later successfully chambered in .222 Rem.

The A1 is indeed a great action. Perhaps even nicer (?) is the L461 - an upgraded L46, with a different trigger (including a trigger mounted safety), different bolt shroud (no shroud mounted safety), and a fixed magazine.

Sometimes The A-series action can be found with the externally adjustable target trigger (easily recognizable due to the two holes in the trigger guard). That is the best trigger available, but I don't know if that trigger was ever offered with anything but the (6mm and .22) PPC chambered rifles?

There are not a bunch of the older Sako actions floating around. Sometimes one sees one on Guns America's Sako Listing. Another possible source might be Shooter's Corner - although the listings of available guns are often somewhat out of date. Call for updates, mail communication is sometimes a bit spotty...

I just checked Shooter's Corner, and there are quite a few interesting Sako rifles in there - even with .223 bolt faces - although I did not see any actions for sale. There was what sounded like a sweet L461 in 6x47, with a Canjar trigger, though, for about 750$...

Good luck

mho :

I recently purchased a used AII Varmint model in 22-250 with the externally adjustable trigger. The barrel is of very heavy contour, similar to the PPC AI target barrels. The bottom metal is of 2 piece design, so it was produced almost at the end of the A series production, around 1990-92? I have SAKO brochures from around that time, and the standard Varmint rifles appear to have a slimmer barrel profile and come equipped with the standard trigger. My guess is that the barrel and trigger were special order on this gun. I have read that over the years SAKO would put together just about any configuration that you wanted, and non-catalogue combinations of components are reasonably common. I would appreciate finding out more about SAKO Varmint guns from this era if anyone has any information to share.

What prompted us to ask was the presence in our shop of a customer barreled action, a Sako A-1 with a .223 bolt face and a detachable magazine. We have a hankering to build a .20 VarTarg on this combo but have not been able to source the actions.
