Hi Guys,

Looking for some input here.

I have a Browning Safari FN action in 30-06 would like to re-chamber it to 300 H & H. I would like to do this to have a 300 H & H to go with the 375 H & H.

In my mind I think it would require opening the action, feed rail work, open the bolt face and set the barrel back.My questions to the experts here; Can this be done? Without spending a small fortune.

You would then have a .300 H & H with a barrel slightly shorter than 22". As far as matching your .375, the barrel contour would be lighter and shorter. It can be done, but I don't think it's advisable to spend several hundred dollars, devalue your present gun, and only gain perhaps a hundred fps.

Stonecreek,

Your thoughts make perfect sense. I asked my self if I was crazy even thinking of such a thing.

I think I will begin looking for a 300 H & H in a Browning Safari .

Thank for the input.

Yes it can be done. Browning safari rifles in good condition have some collector status though, so you might want to think hard before you do this. Maybe sell the -06 and buy a 300 H & H. It would be a shame to carve up a nice old Browning. Of course, it's your rifle, and if that's what you want, yes it's doable, and you pretty much outligned the things to be done. FWIW - Dan

Dan,

That's exactly what I thought after I wrote the post. Why carve up the rifle? It was purchased new in 1964 by my father.

This may be an excuss to begin searching for a Browning Safari in 300 H & H.

Thanks

Even if you rechamber a Browning Safari from .30-06 to .300 H&H, you're only half-done. The magazine box, follower, follower spring, and bolt stop are all wrong for the .300 H&H, as is the bolt face and extractor. It'll also have a barrel that is at least two inches too short to produce .300 H&H velocities, plus the caliber markings will be all wrong.........

Here's a better idea, and it'll be cheaper plus it'll save a fine old Belgian Browning in .30-06 for someone who wants an original rifle in that caliber:

Get a copy of the current issue of "Gun List". Under the "Browning Rifles For Sale" section, there are several dealers who specialize in these rifles, one of them is called "Mike's". Call and try to work a trade of your .30-06 for a Safari Grade in .300 H&H. You'll have to add cash to the deal, but you'll be way ahead in the long run.

Like others have said,VERY bad idea!

Also,I wouldn't part with it,espically if it was your father's rifle. And I certainly wouldn't go chopping it up either.

I'm going to have to disagree with Allen-DON'T go through Mike's in the GunList. My dad had a nightmare with him a few years ago.Finaly GunList told Mike he had to either take the rifle back or be banned from running ads in their magazine.A friend of mine lives in the same town as Mike's shop, and calls him "Mike the dirty gun trader".A VERY promenent Browning collector advised me that a lot of the Brownings he is selling apears to have been touched up by him.

Bigdog,if you want a 300 H&H Safari grade,e-mail me at mayes@tidepool.com.I know where there are several for sale in the $1300-$1400 range.
