Leupold Mount Wont Fit?

have a Leupold one piece mount for a model 10 Savage RH and the mount is stamped with Sav10RH. There is a .050 space between the rear of the mount and the gun action with the front mount screws in place and snug. The gun is a Savage 10ML II flat rear receiver and the mount is for a flat rear receive. I have measured the Savage action and compared it to other 10ML's I have and every dimension is the same and the Leupold mount measures the same too. I've used this same mount on other 10ML's with no problem. Do you have any suggestions to why this mount has that much space? Ive also checked the mount and gun action for being straight and it is. This one has me stumped. Thanks to all who reply.

Well, screw the rear down first and then the front will be tight. Big Grin Seriously, try a different base. .

I may misunderstand your explanation but if both the action and mount are dimensionally identical to others of the same makes which do fit properly, the gap may be due to where the holes are drilled in the mount, the action, or a cumulative effect on both. If it is an error with the mount Leupold will send you another. Call their customer service/tech line for some measurements. They are very responsive.

Do you mean that exact mount? If so, that would imply that the receiver is different. There could be a burr or dent somewhere causing the problem. You could also shim it, which seems to be common with the remingtons.

With the savage ML II's ( don't know about regular short action CF's) many of the recoil lugs protrude higher than the receiver, maybe it's raising the base preventing it from bottoming out at the back, don't know just a thought.

It's just a Savage, use some J-B weld if it's blue, stainless, then try duct tape so it all matches.

Have you tried contacting Leupold? I had an incident with a White M-L where the QR lever was in the way of the cocking piece.

Ive not tried the mount on another gun. I have other 10ML with the same Leupold mount and no problems. Holes line up perfect. I compared this mount to the others I have and dimensions seem to be the same.

I made a rear .045 shim today and using my bore sighter the scope ran out of adjustment before dead center.

I sent Leupold an email today but they haven't replied yet.

I'm coming to the conclusion the action is not machined right. I'm going to put a two piece mount on and see how that does. Thanks again for the replies.

Have you ever stopped to think the new base might be warped? Measure it and use the other base you have to compare it to. If you ran out of adjustment with the shim, that is what your problem is, I think.

This is a common thing. The front of the base is slightly radiused and when you install and tighten the front screw first, the base pivots up off the rear. You have 3 choices, you can replace the base, you can start with the rear screw first, working your way to the front, or, you can remachine the base to fit. Like that hasn't happened. Big Grin

Have you tried mounting the base w/o the shim and use the borescope? If the shim wouldn't allow the scope to center, then the shim is hurting not helping. It is probably just a slightly bent base that will straighten when torqued down.
