Are there any 3-position winchester type safeties for mausers that don't require a milling machine for installation? Maybe one that comes with a new shroud as well?

The Gentry safety http://www.gentrycustom.com/about.htmlis a good choice. The new bolt shroud is steamlined and looks very nice. It's $150 but that includes installation. If you're planning on a new trigger go ahead and get it before you send them the gun. If the trigger is installed after the safety, the whole setup will need to be retuned. Terry

They all come with a new shroud and none *require* a milling machine or surface grinder, or special fixtures, but the job is much easier with those tools.

Everyone of them I see says requires installation by gunsmith. Is this the same as saying "you will screw it up if you try it" :-) I installed a two position Buehler type safety on one of my mausers that came out fine, works good. How much machine work does one of these bad boys require?

AND is it possible to install one of these on a rifle that has already had one of the two position safeties installed?

I've done a Dayton Traister 2-position safety with a Dremel tool. It is very safe but is neither as positive nor as attractive as the Gentry 3-position. I had one done by Gentry (along with correction of feeding problems) and they had it back to me in a week.

anyone with reasonable tools can do this... a dremel will work.. but remember, you ARE risking a potenial outage (you can replace the part) going that way.

3 rules
1: CUT VERY LITTLE...
2: CUT VERY LITTLE...
3: That was too much, cut LESS

The two position safety conversions requires milling of the military sleeve to install the lever, and drilling of holes for the pivot screw and plunger spring.

All of the three position safeties are made with a new sleeve, and require fitting to the cocking piece. And a half of a hole in the back of the bolt needs to be cut in the proper location. You don't really need a milling machine for this BUT it makes it a lot easier to install
