Whitworth question

Wendell ReichWhitworth question
I am trying to buy bases for a gun in Tanzania. All info is third hand info, it is inconsistant as well.
This is a 416 Hoffman made from a Whitworth rifle. The guy is saying that the action is the original Whitworth action with CZ Mauser 98 type action, but he's sure it isn't a 550 type
Is that correct? He got bases for a FN action and it did not fit.
If I buy Leupold 2 pc. QD bases for a Mauser 98, is it going to fit?
Thanks for the help.

Charles_HelmIt is a Zastava commercial Mauser based on the FN Supreme. You have to be sure to pick the correct FN bases.
Someone here probably knows of the top of their head. I can look for it.
Edit: Here is what I found when I looked before:
quote:
The bases are for a large-ring Mauser or a FN/commercial Mauser. The Whitworth is on a Zastava Mark X action which is based on the FN Supreme commercial Mauser action, although the FN actions had the higher level of finish than the Zastava from what I hear.
There are two different large-ring Mauser rear base spacings. I pulled mine out of the safe and the spacing looks to be 1/2" at the rear which would be Talley #252709 98 Mauser Large Ring .500 Rear Steel Bases. It has a "9" on it and the front base has a "12" on it and the front spacing is closer to 7/8" -- I couldn't lay my hands on a micrometer so I do not have the exact measurement.
I have since found my micrometer and could get a better measuerment, but someone else probably has the part numbers if needed.

Wendell ReichThanks Charles. I believe ordering a base for a Whitworth should suffuce?
17 June 2009, 23:06
Charles_HelmIt should if they were all drilled/tapped the same. Can he measure the spacing for the holes in his so you can be sure?

That would probably be good insurance.
I may buy a few options for bases and one set of rings that fits all bases. He wants QD rings.

Charles_HelmI have Talleys on mine. They are a bit high and you may find the QRW Leupold or the Warne sit a little lower.
I was still able to see the sights (well if my eyes were ten years yonger that is) but do not know what setup he has.
If you need any more info let me know. If he sends you measurements you should be in pretty good shape.

michaeljWendell,
You should be okay with the front base and I would buy 2 rear bases as there are primararly 2 different hole spacings for the rear. Hope this helps.

Oday450Wendell,
Here's what the Talley folks said I should order. These have worked on both my 375 H&H and 458 Win Mag Whitworths.
1 x Talley Scope Ring Bases - Blued
- 99. Special Instructions:: Item # 25X709W (Extended Front)
- Firearm Model: 98 Mauser Large Ring .500 Rear

Wendell ReichThanks Oday450, one more question.
This action says "CZ Interarms" on it. Is that what yours says?
I want to get this one right since I have to ship it to Tanzania!
Thanks again for all your help.

Charles_HelmI think the US ones are marked differently as they are marked through the importer.
My markings. Not sure about the extension base. Mine are the regular kind.

Wendell ReichThanks Charles. That is a big help. I sent that link to him to see if his looks like yours.
Thanks.

Oday450Just got home where I could check markings. Both of mine are just like those in the pics Charles posted.
The extension base is great for use with compact or 1X5 scopes. It keeps the front ring from being right on top of the front lens. It also works fine with other scopes. I have a 1x5x20 on the 458 and a 1.75X6X32 on the 375 H&H. Both use the same bases and rings.

Charles_HelmI suppose it depends on the exact scope selection.

I'm sure that is the case. The first scope I had on he 458 was an M8 Compact 2.5X20 that I had on hand. This scope is shorter than the 1.5x5 - and as I think about it, was the scope for which Talley recommended the extension base. The extension base does work fine for other scopes but may not be necessary.

Wendell ReichWould a Leupold VX3 1.5-5x20 need the extension?
I guess it wouldn't hurt. I will brobably get the extension in case he ever puts a smaller scope on it.
20 June 2009, 19:34
Oday450I think that was Charles' point. He has used a regular base for his 1.5x5 as shown in the last photo he posted. I realized this AM after seeing his post that when I bought the first set of bases, I was using a compact scope.
But again, I now have a 1.5x5 and a 1.75x6 using the extension with no problems. I don't believe there is any great difference in cost.

Should be the case, although the PH's could be different as we do not know its origin.
On the extension base, I would avoid if if it blocks part of the magazine, unless it is needed to mount the scope. Probably just a personal preference.
Bases are not that expensive so you could get one of each it you wanted.
