Didn't know this was such a top secret question.. Big Grin

Even in generic form not specifically to the 404 there much be a generally excepted tolerance to each case diameter...

One in which is both safe and allows for good functioning, one in the middle ground with a safe +/-.

You damn sure can't put a .543 case into a .540 bolt face diameter... and surely there has to be a maximum there somewhere that you all pretty much agree to!

I'm not a gunsmith but I've heard a .545" minimum to .550" maximum; CRF bolt face is somewhat more forgiving relative to the dimensions than a push feed.

Perhaps an actual gunsmith will answer.

Unless your brass has something far differnet than .543" I would look to .545-546.

When I open a bolt face, I usually shoot for a couple thousandths over the case head dimension. I wouldn't go more than .005. Depending on the type of extractor, if you go too far you can lose control of the case resulting in the gnashing of teeth.

.005 over is pretty much what I was figuring, and I have no experiance in questioning any different...

But looking at both SAMI cartridge and chamber drawings, is there really a need to maintain a tighter tollerance on the bolt face diamerer than that of the chamber at the base???

Origainally why I was asking is I've located a Mauser Magnum action to where the bolt has already been opened up to .555 or that is what the owner has said.

Measure your case head. While an 06 is listed as .473 I've measure factory as small as .467".

Yes, the bolt face supports the rim, not the base of the cartridge. If there is too much slop then the case can slip from the extractor and cause you nothing but grief. Especially if something is charging you.

Sorry to hijack, but is there a SAAMI drawing for the 404 Jeffery?

30+ years experience tells me that perfection hit at .264. Others are adequate but anything before or after is wishful thinking.

No, no SAMI drawings for the 404! I was referring to just some general drawings for other cartridges. Sorry for the impression I left.
